We were lucky to catch up with Matt Svetlak recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Matt thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Hi everyone! I’m Matt Svetlak, Product Director of iScanner at BP Mobile (AIBY Group).
Last year, iScanner celebrated its 10-year anniversary. This product started as a convenient tool for scanning documents on a phone and became an award-winning platform for scanning and managing documents. Users can refine scanned documents with AI, edit and sign PDFs, extract content with advanced OCR, and work seamlessly with scans across all devices. We’ve achieved 125 million downloads worldwide and continue to develop new features that boost our users’ productivity.
Ten years ago, I worked as a QA engineer for mobile applications and had big dreams of becoming a Product Manager. I took a chance and put myself forward to work on a new product. In 2014–2015 at BP Mobile, we saw a substantial rise in utility apps and decided to take a closer look at this category. Surprisingly, there were almost no good scanner apps. Our search for an all-in-one solution led us to iScanner—an easy, fast scanning app that excelled at digitizing documents.
As the number of users grew, so did the app’s functionality. Scanning documents alone wasn’t enough. Listening closely to user feedback, the iScanner engineering team began developing their own algorithms and adding features that expanded the app’s capabilities. Whether it was digitizing textbooks, filling out application forms, submitting taxes, or signing business documents on the go, iScanner became a tool people relied on every day.
Our team continues to look for new opportunities to improve the product
Our team is doing a really good job and constantly looks for new opportunities to improve the product.

Matt, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my career in mobile app development as a QA engineer at BP Mobile (AIBY Group), a US-based company. I didn’t limit myself to testing; I constantly expanded my knowledge across all aspects of app development, from UX to data analytics. I’ve always wanted to help create high-quality, reliable, problem-solving tools for users. With that mindset, even as a tester, I regularly suggested ideas to improve the projects I was working on. It wasn’t in my job description, but I found it fun and important. When the company opened a Product Manager position, I decided to jump on the opportunity. A few years ago, I became Product Director at iScanner, taking on more strategic product development responsibilities.
What makes me most proud is that we’ve moved from combining existing solutions to developing our own algorithms in-house. For example, we’ve implemented our own distortion correction and edge repair algorithms. These AI-powered features make it possible for anyone to create professional-quality documents.
At iScanner, we focus on blending simplicity, privacy, AI-powered tools, and robust PDF editing.
Apart from iScanner, my team develops the app Forma, which I believe is going to become a real game-changer in the world of PDF editors. As we speak, we’re preparing for its release. After that, people won’t need to edit PDFs manually—they’ll do it using prompts. Users will describe what they want to change in a file, and our app will make those changes automatically. I’m really excited by this AI-based technology. It’s unique and something I feel will really make waves in the market.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Our reputation is built on systematic, consistent work. For more than 10 years, we’ve analyzed user feedback and developed and tested hypotheses based on it. We’re not limited to reviews in the App Store or Play Store—we collect feedback from wherever people share their opinions, including Reddit, Facebook, LinkedIn, Trustpilot, and G2. This allows us to see the bigger picture and understand the many different ways people use our app. Thanks to this, we prioritize the development of features that are most in demand and solve real users’ problems.
We pay close attention to security because we understand how important it is for our users to feel confident that their documents and personal information are protected. In iScanner, documents are stored locally in the app by default, and cloud syncing is optional. If users choose to sync to the cloud, documents will be stored on AWS (Amazon Web Services). Beyond that, users can also add extra layers of security, like two-factor authentication.
iScanner has core values that help build trust with users. One of them is sustainability. iScanner encourages users to help create a greener planet because sharing and working with documents digitally is more sustainable than printing them. We developed special eco-features that turn every exported document into a contribution toward saving a tree. Users can receive badges or certificates for their efforts. Through this program, millions are saving paper and tracking their exact environmental impact.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Our growth to 125 million downloads wasn’t driven by a single magic bullet, but by a deeply user-centric marketing strategy.
First and foremost, the product itself is our best marketing tool. When you build a tool that solves a real pain point—like instantly turning a poorly lit, skewed photo of a document into a crisp, professional PDF—users naturally want to try it and stay with us because they appreciate its quality and intuitive interface.
In the utilities category, visibility is everything. We treat App Store Optimization (ASO) not as a one-time setup, but as a continuous loop of experimenting with keywords, visuals, and user intent.
Ultimately, our most effective strategy has been staying agile: keeping our ear to the ground, leveraging AI before it became a buzzword, and making sure every new user gets value from their very first use of iScanner.
