We were lucky to catch up with Natalie Wilson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Natalie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
The Overton Park Shell has been a series of risks, during my tenure as Executive Director…..From risk to our brand and change of name to risk of programming decisions to risk of scaling the operation in capital development. We as a small nonprofit has lended in an approach that healthy risk is important.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My career has been driven by a passion for building organizations that create meaningful impact in their communities. Over the last 25 years, I’ve had the opportunity to lead and transform organizations across a variety of sectors, including the performing arts, tourism, parks and recreation, youth development, philanthropy, and community services. What has always inspired me is the opportunity to bring people together around a shared vision and create something sustainable that improves lives.
I currently serve as Executive Director of the Overton Park Shell, one of America’s most historic music venues. In this role, I oversee strategic planning, fundraising, operations, programming, financial stewardship, and long-term organizational growth. Throughout my career, I’ve been drawn to organizations at pivotal moments—whether launching a new initiative, expanding services, building community engagement, or leading a turnaround effort. I enjoy solving complex challenges and helping organizations move from where they are to where they aspire to be.
The work I provide centers around leadership, organizational transformation, strategic growth, and community impact. Whether developing multimillion-dollar fundraising campaigns, leading large teams, managing significant budgets and investments, or creating innovative public programs, my focus is always on building strong organizations that can serve their communities for generations.
What sets me apart is my ability to combine big-picture vision with practical execution. I have spent my career aligning boards, donors, community leaders, government partners, and stakeholders around ambitious goals while fostering cultures of accountability, innovation, and collaboration. I believe successful leadership is not just about managing organizations—it’s about inspiring people, building trust, and creating lasting momentum.
One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is leading the transformation of the Overton Park Shell. We successfully restored and elevated the venue’s historic identity, expanded access and programming, strengthened financial sustainability, and created a world-class cultural destination that now serves more than 200,000 visitors annually. I’m equally proud of the many organizations I’ve helped grow throughout my career and the talented teams I’ve had the privilege to mentor and develop.
What I want people to know about me and my work is that I lead with purpose, integrity, and a deep commitment to community. I believe great organizations are built through relationships, vision, and service. My brand is rooted in creating meaningful impact, building sustainable futures, and helping organizations reach their fullest potential while remaining true to their mission and values.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In my view, the most important thing society can do to support artists and a thriving creative ecosystem is to recognize that the arts are not a luxury—they are an essential part of a healthy, vibrant community. Artists help us tell our stories, preserve our culture, challenge our thinking, and bring people together in ways few other things can.
Supporting artists begins with investing in them. That means creating funding opportunities, affordable spaces to create and perform, access to professional development, and pathways for sustainable careers. Too often, we celebrate artists for the value they bring to our communities while overlooking the financial and structural support they need to thrive.
Communities also benefit when they view the arts as an economic driver. A strong creative ecosystem attracts visitors, strengthens neighborhoods, supports local businesses, and contributes to a city’s identity and quality of life. When public, private, and philanthropic sectors work together to invest in the arts, the return extends far beyond the cultural sector.
Equally important is ensuring access. Every person, regardless of age, income, or background, should have opportunities to experience and participate in the arts. Diverse voices, perspectives, and artistic expressions make our communities stronger and more connected.
Throughout my career, I have seen firsthand how the arts can transform individuals and communities. When we invest in artists, we are investing in creativity, innovation, civic pride, and human connection. A thriving creative ecosystem doesn’t happen by accident—it happens when communities intentionally value, support, and champion the people who create it.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Absolutely. At the heart of my work is a belief that the arts have the power to transform communities and bring people together in meaningful ways. My mission has never been solely about presenting performances or managing organizations—it’s about creating opportunities for connection, inspiration, and belonging.
Throughout my career, I have been drawn to organizations that serve as community assets and catalysts for positive change. Whether in the arts, parks and recreation, youth development, or nonprofit leadership, my goal has always been to build sustainable organizations that expand access, strengthen civic pride, and improve quality of life.
Today, that mission is especially evident through my work with the Overton Park Shell. I am passionate about preserving historic and cultural treasures while ensuring they remain relevant, accessible, and welcoming to future generations. I believe everyone deserves access to transformative cultural experiences regardless of their background or circumstances.
What drives me most is the opportunity to create lasting impact. If my work helps an artist find a platform, inspires a young person to dream bigger, brings neighbors together, or strengthens the cultural fabric of a community, then I consider that success. Ultimately, my mission is to leave organizations, communities, and opportunities stronger than I found them and to help create spaces where creativity, connection, and possibility can thrive.
