We recently connected with McKayla Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Hi McKayla, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my free webnovel ‘Where Our Blue Is’. When I began writing it, I was going through a difficult period in my own life and found myself searching for stories that reflected what I was feeling. I wanted to read about someone facing similar struggles and finding a way through them, but I couldn’t quite find the story I needed, so I decided to write it myself.
As I developed the main character, Mackie, I intentionally put her through circumstances that mirrored many of my own experiences. Through the writing process, I watched her confront challenges, grow, and ultimately heal. In many ways, writing her journey helped me navigate my own. It gave me a space to process emotions, explore difficult questions, and imagine what healing could look like.
What makes the project so meaningful to me is that it became more than a story. It was a form of healing for both Mackie and me.
Her story is available for free on Wattpad and is described as:
Mackie May is a girl of many lives—runway model, author, aspiring doctor—but when her ambitions stall and her sense of self begins to unravel, she finds herself drifting between the lives she’s already lived until a chance encounter at a Houston dive bar introduces her to Jude Sigerton— a man who looks suspiciously like a hot anime villain?
‘Where Our Blue Is’ is a romantic comedy slice-of-life for the women who rebuild themselves.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I’m an indie author who has been passionate about storytelling for as long as I can remember. I released my first novel ‘Under the World’ in 2022. In 2023, I published a novella titled ‘From Heaven to Eden’. Most recently, I released ‘Another Universe’ and ‘Where Our Blue Is’.
Each of my books explores different stories and themes. ‘Under the World’ follows Violaine, a supernatural hunter who dies in combat only to awaken in the underworld as the very creature she once hunted, forcing her to uncover the truth behind her death while navigating the dangerous politics of the dead. ‘From Heaven to Eden’ tells the story of Arden as he’s accused of a crime he didn’t commit and is cast into a conflict between angels and demons where survival may depend on uncovering the secrets hidden in his blood. ‘Another Universe’ is a fantasy romance about Jester Yarrow, whose exile to a rival fae clan leads to an unexpected love story that resurfaces years later, forcing him to confront the choices and sacrifices of his past. ‘Where Our Blue Is’ follows Mackie May, a former model, author, and aspiring doctor struggling to find her place in the world until an unexpected encounter challenges everything she thought she knew about herself and her future.
I’m proud of each of my books and the creativity, dedication, and hard work that went into bringing them to life. One of the reasons I chose the indie publishing route is because it allows me to remain authentic to my vision as an author. I have the freedom to choose the editors, cover artists, and creative professionals I collaborate with, as well as how my stories are presented to readers. Every decision—from the words on the page to the cover design—reflects my values and creative goals.
When someone picks up one of my books, I want them to know they’re getting something that is genuinely and unapologetically me.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is the community I’ve built through my work. By sharing my stories with the world, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with readers who have related to my characters and the experiences they go through. Writing has also introduced me to an amazing community of fellow authors. At its heart, storytelling is about connection, and that connection is what I find most rewarding.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think one of the most important things society can do to support artists and creatives is to continue valuing and investing in human created art. We live in a time when technology can generate content faster than ever before, but art has always been about more than output.
A thriving creative ecosystem depends on recognizing the value of human creativity. While technology will continue to evolve, I believe there will always be something uniquely meaningful about art created by human beings for other human beings.
