We caught up with the brilliant and insightful David Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
David, appreciate you joining us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
Team K2 Karate opened in 1998, I wanted the name to be unique since the style of martial arts that we offer is a mixed style of American Karate, Sport Karate, and BJJ so the name K2 was established.
Named after the Mountain K2, one of the most dangerous mountains to climb it was a good fit with a K, for Karate, and 2, for the 2 or more styles that we teach.
In the martial arts, you start as a white belt and work your way up through the ranks, this is the same as climbing a mountain, you start at base camp and ascend towards the summit to reach your goal.
The name Team K2 Karate has become a well-known name in the community and also among other martial artists in the area and over the years we have always strived to produce quality martial artists, respectful competitors and create leaders for life.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I started martial arts in the early eighties during my freshman year of High School while also wrestling in Mason City Iowa, shortly after I graduated high school I moved to Texas where I continued my training and earned my Black Belt. I became a top competitor on the tournament circuit in the mid to late ninety’s competing in the NBL, TKO and AOK tournament series traveling all over the US and to other countries, I couldn’t get enough. After training many years in the martial arts and competing in tournaments, I opened my own school, K2 Karate in the Houston Katy, Texas area.
I have been operating Team K2 Karate in the Katy area for over 20 years teaching American style Taekwondo Sport Karate and traditional martial arts, that includes Katas/Forms, self-defense and also some BJJ. Team K2 Karate in Katy Texas offer classes for new students, ages 5 1/2 & up, we make everyone feel like family at our school and truly believe martial arts will improve your life.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals, online marketing and word of mouth are all great and have helped me over the years, but I love when a student who had trained many years ago shows up to Team K2 with their own child and gets them started in the martial arts. My goal is a never-ending story or journey to improve, adapt and evolve while maintaining the basic principles of martial arts such as discipline, self-control, focus and respect with the success of improving the community all with the power of martial arts.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
At Team K2 Karate we stay close to the roots, traditional training with a modern touch. New students are taking the first step towards a lifelong experience by stepping on the mat with some training days being hard, some fun, but all with a purpose. At Team K2 Karate in Katy Texas consistency is key along with the never-ending goal of self-improvement while achieving your goals and improving your mind, body, and spirit.
