We were lucky to catch up with YUJIE HUANG recently and have shared our conversation below.
YUJIE, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I am very grateful to say that I do make a living entirely from my creative work now. But it definitely was not like that from day one. It took a lot of late nights, learning, and adjusting my path to get to this point.
My journey really started to solidify during my time at SCAD. Pursuing two Master’s degrees in Illustration and Motion Media Design was intense, but it gave me the exact technical foundation I needed. A massive milestone for me was getting represented by my agency, Shannon Associates. Having a dedicated team to support me completely changed the trajectory of my career. It took a lot of pressure off the constant hustle for clients and allowed me to focus much more on the actual creative work.
Another major step was learning to diversify the kinds of projects I take on. I realized early on that I did not have to choose between doing only motion graphics or only illustration. Being able to work on board game illustrations, pivot to illustrating a published book like Song of the Yellow Dragon, and then take on professional motion design contracts really helped stabilize my income.
If I could have sped up the process knowing what I know now, I would tell my younger self to share my work sooner and not wait for my portfolio to feel absolutely perfect. I would also have tried to blend my motion and illustration skills much earlier instead of treating them as two separate career paths.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hello! I am Yujie Huang. I am a professional illustrator and motion designer, and I run my own practice called Yujie Creative.
My journey into this industry really crystallized during my time at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I earned two Master of Arts degrees there, one in Illustration and another in Motion Media Design. I have always been deeply passionate about visual storytelling, and immersing myself in both still and moving images gave me the exact technical and creative foundation I needed to build my career.
Through Yujie Creative, I provide a hybrid of visual services. I create dynamic motion graphics for digital media, and I also do illustration for publishing and tabletop games. The main challenge I solve for my clients is bridging the gap between static art and engaging animation. Often, clients need to hire an illustrator and an animator separately. Because I specialize in both, I can conceptualize an illustration with the final animation already in mind. This saves a lot of time and results in a much more cohesive, unified final product.
The main thing I want potential clients and followers to know about Yujie Creative is that I am deeply committed to crafting visuals that are not just beautiful, but emotionally resonant. I am always looking for new ways to make art move and to tell stories that genuinely connect with people.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my reputation in the market was built on a combination of extreme consistency in my aesthetic and a very specific technical versatility.
Early on, I made a conscious decision to develop a style that feels minimalist, premium, and highly intuitive. I am heavily inspired by clean, user focused design principles, and I carry that into every single piece of artwork I create. When art directors and clients look at my portfolio, they know exactly what kind of elevated quality they are going to get. That level of predictability and visual standard builds trust very quickly.
Another massive factor is my dual skill set. Because I have formal training and professional experience in both illustration and motion media design, I offer a unique value proposition. Many studios have to hire an illustrator to create the visual assets and then find a separate animator to bring them to life. I can handle that entire pipeline. Being able to conceptualize, draw, and animate under one roof ensures the final product is completely cohesive. It makes my clients’ lives significantly easier, and word of mouth travels fast when you make a project run smoothly.
Finally, I have to credit my representation at Shannon Associates. Having a respected agency vouching for my work and connecting me with incredible clients immediately elevated my standing in the industry. Knowing that an established team stands behind my brand gives new clients a deep sense of confidence before we even begin a project.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the absolute most rewarding part of being a creative is the moment an idea truly comes to life and connects with another person. Because my work spans both illustration and motion design, I get to experience this in a few different ways.
There is a very specific kind of magic in taking a completely static, flat design and adding movement to it. Seeing a concept breathe and flow on a screen for the first time never gets old. It feels like you are giving life to something that did not exist a few days prior.
On the flip side, there is the incredible, tactile reward of seeing my work out in the physical world. Holding a printed copy of a book I illustrated or seeing people gather around to play a board game featuring my art provides such a deep sense of permanence and accomplishment.
But ultimately, the true reward is the human connection. Knowing that my work is not just sitting on a hard drive, but is actually out there solving problems for my clients or evoking a genuine emotion from an audience is what keeps me going. Whether I am striving for that perfect, minimalist aesthetic in a digital campaign or painting a highly detailed scene for a story, knowing that the final piece will bring value to someone else makes all the meticulous revisions and late nights completely worth it.
