We recently connected with Michelle Riley and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
At 24 years old, after years of working as a personal trainer and group fitness instructor in big-box gyms, I realized there was something missing. While I loved helping women improve their health and fitness, my heart was pulling me toward something bigger.
I wanted to create a space where women could feel empowered, build confidence, gain strength, and truly connect with one another. A place where women were encouraged instead of intimidated. A place free from gimmicks, quick fixes, and the overwhelming atmosphere that so many women experience in traditional gym settings. I wanted to be the coach who not only understood the science behind fitness and nutrition but also understood the importance of making women feel supported, capable, and seen.
That dream became a reality when I opened the doors to my own fitness studio in Maryland. It was during that chapter of my life that I also met my now husband, who was serving in the military. As exciting as that new journey was, it eventually meant closing the doors to my physical studio and moving from state to state throughout his military career.
Leaving my studio behind was one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made. I loved the close-knit community we had built, and I worried that I would never be able to recreate those relationships elsewhere. But that challenge became one of the greatest turning points of my life and career.
Instead of giving up on my mission, I completely transformed my business model and moved everything online. That decision led to the birth of Fierce & FIT.
I built my own coaching app platform and continued expanding my education through advanced certifications in women’s nutrition, prenatal fitness, and postpartum fitness. What started as a way to stay connected with women regardless of location quickly grew into something far bigger than I ever imagined.
Today, I have proudly coached women full-time online for over eight years, helping women around the world become stronger, healthier, and more confident versions of themselves. One of the most rewarding parts of this journey is that some of the very women who walked through the doors of my Maryland studio years ago are still with me today, now coaching alongside women from across the country and beyond.
Fierce & FIT was built on the belief that women deserve more than a workout plan. They deserve education, support, accountability, and a community that lifts them up. Whether they’re navigating pregnancy, postpartum, motherhood, demanding careers, menopause, or simply striving to become the strongest version of themselves, my mission has always been to help women feel empowered in every season of life.
If there’s one piece of advice I would give to anyone looking to build a career in fitness, coaching, or entrepreneurship, it’s this: TAKE THE RISK.
There will always be people who tell you why something won’t work. Sometimes those people are complete strangers. Sometimes they’re the people closest to you. In my own journey, I had people who genuinely loved me and wanted what they thought was “best” for me question my decisions. They worried about stability, security, and whether pursuing my dream was realistic.
But I’ve learned that nobody can hear your calling quite like you can.
Stay true to your heart. Trust your instincts. Be willing to bet on yourself even when others don’t fully understand your vision.
Will you fail at times? Absolutely.
I have failed. I’ve made mistakes. I’ve invested in things that didn’t work. I’ve launched ideas that fell flat. I’ve had moments where I questioned everything.
But every failure taught me something valuable. Every setback helped shape me into a better coach, a better business owner, and a better leader. Success isn’t about avoiding failure—it’s about learning from it and continuing to move forward.
Today, I can confidently say that I am living proof that you don’t need to come from a big city, have unlimited resources, or have everything figured out from the start. I’m a small-town girl who took a chance on herself, followed her passion, and built a life centered around freedom, purpose, and doing what I love every single day.
I’ve been blessed to build a thriving business that allows me to serve women around the world, be present for my family, continue growing as a coach, and wake up every day excited about the work I get to do. The journey hasn’t always been easy, but it has been worth every challenge, every setback, and every leap of faith.
The journey won’t always be easy, but if you’re willing to stay the course, trust yourself, and keep showing up, it may just be the best decision you ever make.

Michelle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I built my own coaching platform and continued expanding my education through advanced certifications in women’s nutrition, prenatal fitness, and postpartum fitness. What started as a way to stay connected with women regardless of location quickly grew into something far bigger than I ever imagined.
Fast forward 17 years from that first aqua aerobics class, and I continue to hone my craft every single day. One of the greatest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of knowing exactly who you serve and what they need.
I’ve been fortunate because my ideal client has always been some version of myself.
As a women’s coach, I find myself helping women navigate many of the same stages of life that I have experienced firsthand. They’re ambitious. They’re career-driven. They’re mothers or soon-to-be mothers. They’re balancing demanding schedules, caring for others, chasing toddlers, building businesses, climbing corporate ladders, and trying to figure out how to prioritize themselves without guilt.
They want to feel strong.
They want to feel confident.
They want to feel healthy.
They want to look in the mirror and recognize the woman staring back at them.
And in my experience, that transformation always starts from within. It begins with their inner voice, their confidence, their mindset, and their willingness to believe they are worthy of investing in themselves.
Of all the accomplishments throughout my career, I am most proud of my own tenacity, grit, consistency, and discipline. Not because they make me successful, but because they allow me to show up as the best version of myself every day.
Success starts long before the workday begins.
It starts with how I take care of my body. It starts with my workouts, my nutrition, my habits, and my commitment to my own health. It starts with showing up for myself so I can better show up for my family, my clients, and my business.
I firmly believe you can only be as successful in your career as your body is strong enough to support. Energy, confidence, resilience, discipline, and leadership are all built through the promises we keep to ourselves.
That’s what sets me apart as a coach.
I don’t just teach it—I live it.
I believe in talking the talk and walking the walk. I believe women deserve role models who understand the realities of balancing careers, motherhood, relationships, and personal goals. I want women to see what’s possible when they stop putting themselves last.
Because the truth is, you can prioritize your health and still get the promotion.
You can build muscle and build a business.
You can be a wonderful mother, wife, sister, daughter, friend, and leader while still carving out time for yourself.
In fact, I believe you become better in all those roles when you do.
Today, I have proudly coached women full-time online for over eight years, helping women around the world become stronger, healthier, and more confident versions of themselves. One of the most rewarding parts of this journey is that some of the very women who walked through the doors of my Maryland studio years ago are still with me today, now alongside women from across the country and around the world.

To me, being Fierce & FIT isn’t about six-pack abs or a number on a scale.
It’s about having the strength to show up for yourself.
It’s about building confidence from the inside out.
It’s about having the courage to chase your dreams while still being present for the people you love.
It’s about creating a life where health, happiness, family, career, and purpose all work together.
That’s what Fierce & FIT means to me. And that’s the mission I proudly carry into every woman I have the privilege of coaching.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
This would work well as a separate section in your presentation, keynote, or business feature story:
One of the questions I get asked most often is, “How did you build such a strong reputation in your market?”
While social media has absolutely played a huge role in growing my business, I believe reputation is built long before someone ever clicks the follow button.
It’s built through experience.
It’s built through consistency.
And it’s built through becoming a reliable resource in your community.
Long before I was coaching women online across the country, I was teaching classes, training clients face-to-face, speaking with women every day, listening to their struggles, and helping them navigate real-life challenges. Those experiences gave me something that no algorithm can replicate: genuine connection and trust.
I think one of the biggest mistakes professionals make today is trying to become someone they’re not.
People can feel authenticity.
They can also feel when someone is trying too hard to imitate another coach, creator, or expert.
My advice is simple: Be yourself.
Show up as the person you truly are—not the person you think social media wants you to be.
Don’t be afraid to be passionate about your mission. Don’t be afraid to talk about what drives you. Don’t be afraid to let people see the human behind the business.
The reality is that people don’t just buy coaching programs. They buy into people they trust.
In my market as a women’s online trainer, that means understanding exactly who I serve. It means establishing a clear niche and becoming deeply familiar with the women I want to help.
For me, that’s women navigating careers, motherhood, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, changing hormones, busy schedules, and the everyday challenge of trying to prioritize themselves while caring for everyone else.
The reason I connect so deeply with my audience is because I’ve lived many of those same experiences myself.
I don’t market to women from a distance—I put myself in their shoes.
I understand what it’s like to juggle a career, a family, personal goals, and the desire to feel strong and confident in your own skin. That perspective allows me to create content, programs, and conversations that truly resonate.
Yes, social media is a powerful tool. In today’s world, it’s one of the best ways to share your message and reach the people who need your help.
But social media should be a reflection of your expertise—not a replacement for it.
The coaches and entrepreneurs who build lasting businesses are the ones who combine real-world experience with authentic storytelling. They use social media to educate, inspire, and demonstrate what’s possible.
When women see me showing up for my workouts, prioritizing my health, balancing motherhood and business ownership, and practicing what I preach, they aren’t just hearing my message—they’re seeing it in action.
That’s how trust is built.
And trust is what ultimately builds a reputation that lasts.
This section pairs nicely with your story because it shifts from *how you built your career* to *how you built credibility and influence within your industry*.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
This would make a strong standalone section on authority-building, visibility, and client acquisition:
One of the most effective ways I have grown my clientele over the years has actually had very little to do with chasing social media trends and everything to do with building genuine authority through speaking engagements and becoming a published author.
When people think about public speaking, they often think they need to land a TED Talk or speak on some massive stage before they can be seen as an expert. I couldn’t disagree more.
Some of the most meaningful opportunities I’ve ever had came from speaking at local events, community organizations, women’s groups, conferences, and podcasts that aligned with my values and mission.
My advice to professionals looking to grow their business is simple: stop waiting for the “big break” and start saying yes to opportunities that allow you to share your expertise right now.
Find podcasts that share your beliefs and values.
Volunteer to speak at local events.
Connect with organizations in your community.
Raise your hand when opportunities present themselves.
The goal isn’t necessarily to reach millions of people overnight. The goal is to connect deeply with the right people.
Every podcast interview, speaking engagement, workshop, or presentation gives people an opportunity to see who you are, what you stand for, and how you can help them.
It allows you to communicate something social media often cannot: your passion.
When someone hears you speak authentically about your mission, your experiences, and the people you serve, trust begins to form. They start to feel connected to you long before they ever become a client.
For me, one of the most rewarding ways I’ve established that credibility was by becoming a published author.
Co-authoring and publishing *The Health and Wealth Sisters 360 Action Plan* was more than simply writing a book. It was an opportunity to put my thoughts, experiences, philosophy, and expertise into a format that would allow people to truly get to know me.
A book gives readers a glimpse behind the curtain.
It allows them to understand not only what you do, but why you do it.
It creates a deeper connection than a social media post ever could.
When someone picks up your book, listens to your speech, hears your podcast interview, or attends one of your workshops, they aren’t just consuming information. They’re learning your story. They’re understanding your values. They’re discovering whether your message resonates with their own goals and challenges.
That’s where true connection happens.
That’s also where trust is built.
I believe every professional should find ways to share their knowledge beyond social media. Whether that’s through speaking, writing, podcasting, workshops, community events, or publishing a book, these opportunities allow you to establish yourself as an authority while serving others in a meaningful way.
Most importantly, don’t shy away from talking about what you do.
Embrace it.
Speak confidently about your expertise.
Own your experience.
The people who need your help are looking for someone who believes in their own ability to help them.
For me, every speaking engagement, podcast appearance, and page of my book has served the same purpose: helping people feel seen, understood, and empowered to take action in their own lives.
And when your message genuinely resonates with someone, clients naturally follow.
This topic flows nicely after your reputation-building section because it highlights how you moved from being known locally to becoming an authority through speaking, publishing, and thought leadership.
