We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marissa Clark. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Marissa below.
Marissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
First, I think it’s important to define – “what is success?”
For myself, success used to be a financial quota. I used to create revenue goals and would only consider that month a “success” if those money markers were met.
But recently, I’ve changed my perception on the definition of success.
I revisited what made me want to pursue business in the first place: better work-life balance, the desire to serve others, and the ability to be limitless in my growth and potential.
So even when a particular revenue goal isn’t hit, I still take inventory of my success using those criteria: Was I able to take a mental health day when needed? Did I help a client or team member when they were in need? Am I creating content that really resonates with my audience?
If so, then I would define that as a success.
But no matter your chosen metrics, I think success stems from a combination of remaining consistent, harnessing a slight bit of stubbornness in your perseverance, and the ability to remain patient with both yourself and others.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I’m Marissa: Former Johnny’s House morning / XL 106.7 radio personality turned creator and business owner. I’ve enjoyed broadcasting and hosting for many incredible organizations in addition to XL 106.7 such as the Houston Astros, Florida Pride, Impact Wrestling, and several philanthropic causes.
And while I LOVE being in front of the camera or on stage as an emcee, I also became fascinated with the brands and CEO’s (particularly women) who worked behind the scenes of the organizations I was representing.
Eventually, I combined my passions of broadcasting and female empowerment to form a business consulting and mentoring other women. I wanted them to know that not only can you be an impactful and successful businesswoman, but you can also do it while being an amazing wife, mother, friend, and human being. Now I’m really proud to be able to help women grow their wealth, community impact, and free time!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I would definitely consider this season of life a boot camp for “resilience”!
Once we had navigated the pandemic, I was very much looking forward to getting back to “precedented” times.
However, in December of 2021, my car was hit and pushed off the interstate, resulting in severe medical complications- including a traumatic brain injury.
Not only was it a test of physical, emotional, and cognitive resilience, but also a massive test of the business systems and infrastructure we had put in place. I was truly afraid of losing everything that I’d worked so hard to build over the past few years.
In July of 2022 I underwent neck and back surgery, and in just three weeks I’ll be heading to New York to undergo brain surgery.
And truthfully, for the first few months I experienced a lot of bitterness. I felt resentment and the classic “why me?” mentality. How could this happen when I was so close to reaching these massive goals? But I had to remember, three steps forward and two steps back is still one step forward in the end.
As long as I stay focused on building momentum on the good days, this too shall pass.
Because if I can make it through brain surgery, I can make it through anything!
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
One thing that I’m extremely proud of is the reputation of “authenticity” from both my personal and professional branding.
While I enjoy consuming idyllic content of influencers and business owners showing off their 4am gym routines, flashy cars, and perfectly-curated homes, I find myself discovering that isn’t actually reality for most people (myself included),
So I’ve made a conscious effort to be transparent with my audience and clients about myself – flaws and all. And I’ve found it’s really resonated and help build a connection with them!
It’s a shift I’m really excited to see among larger corporations as well. As a consumer, I find myself drawn to brands that are humanizing themselves. Ones that share their founders stories, use humor and online trends, and use real models in campaigns versus photoshopped ads.
While it requires a massive amount of vulnerability, it can only be beneficial from both a consumer and business standpoint.
