We were lucky to catch up with Jeff Willie recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jeff, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents can play a significant role in affecting how our lives and careers turn out – and so we think it’s important to look back and have conversations about what our parents did that affected us positive (or negatively) so that we can learn from the billions of experiences in each generation. What’s something you feel your parents did right that impacted you positively.
My parents didn’t leave me with wealth, they left me values. And those values became my greatest inheritance. They taught dignity despite poverty. My father’s words have become one of your life’s guiding principles: “Just because you are poor, you don’t have to look poor or act poor.” That wasn’t about clothing. It was about self-respect. Today, I carry myself with confidence whether I’m speaking to a mayor, a CEO, a four-star general, or a student.
My parents modeled sacrifice. Raising 6 boys and 6 girls in the woods in a four-room shack without electricity, indoor plumbing, without a car, raised our food, plowed the fields with a mule, rode to church on a wagon, my father could read or write, he never drove an automobile my mother had a third-grade education, I attended segregated schools until the seventh grade. They didn’t complain, they provided. That taught me that leadership is service before self.
My parents gave me work ethics. Growing our own food, plowing with a mule, and doing whatever needed to be done created a mindset that hard work is simply what responsible people do. My parents modeled and taught me perseverance, humility, faith, and most importantly, that success is measured by people you impact, not possessions.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
After my wife, Pat, earned her master’s degree, I decided it was time to begin my own college journey. There was just one obstacle standing between me and my associate degree, College Algebra. The fear of that class had followed me for almost 20 years.
When I was in the eighth grade, my math teacher told me I was stupid, that I would never amount to anything, and advised me not to take math in the ninth grade. I believed those words. I skipped ninth-grade math because I had accepted someone else’s opinion of my potential.
Years later, while serving in the United States Air Force, I postponed College Algebra until it was the very last class I needed to graduate. I was still carrying the weight of those words from middle school. It took me four attempts to pass College Algebra with a “C”.
That “C” wasn’t just a passing grade, it represented freedom. The monkey was finally off my back. More importantly, it proved that an opinion spoken over me as a child does not have to become the story of my life.
That experience taught me one of the greatest leadership lessons I’ve ever learned: Never allow someone else’s limited belief in you to become your lifelong limitation. This is the lesson I shared with my high students and college students for 20 plus years as a professor.
My past may explain where I started, but it never has the authority to determine where I finish. And I’m not finished, “Inspire Until I Expire”

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me are educators and church leaders. My background also positions me well with municipal leaders, veterans’ organizations, nonprofits, and civic groups.
