We recently connected with Jenice Owens and have shared our conversation below.
Jenice, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
There are people in this world who have not done the work to heal their internal wounds and they have a tendency to project their unhappiness onto others. Unfortunately, I experienced this first hand on many occasions. I used to think there was something wrong with me until I understood that when light enters places it often disrupts atmospheres that operates in darkness. I’ve learned to never dim my light for the discomfort of others.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Jenice Owens and I am a published author, entrepreneur and creative. I grew up in a very musical family and household. My mother would often play many genres of music which exposed me to different sounds and frequencies. Over time I developed an ear and a deep love for music, especially the lyrics.
I began my writing journey with poetry, haikus and short stories. I was challenged to write a hook for a song I was featured on and I found my niche writing songs for myself and others. There was a time of great transition in my life that made me consider legacy and I decided to begin my journey as an author.
I wrote and published “Coco Brown” a children’s book about a young girl’s journey to self discovery. This is my story and Coco Brown has inspired both children and parents alike to love themselves and to know God make no mistakes.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I had an opportunity to go to school in New York. Ever since I was a child I’ve always dreamed of living there but fear almost made me miss out. Needless to say, I took the opportunity and it was the best decision I made in my life. Making that faith move clear across the country from Sacramento, Ca took a lot of courage and it made me who I am today.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is receiving an idea from God, acting on it and watching it manifest into something beautiful because of my obedience.
