We recently connected with Ramone Dixon and have shared our conversation below.
Ramone, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
People often ask if I should have gone full-time in the wedding industry sooner. Looking back, I don’t think doing it earlier—or waiting longer—would have put me in a better position than where I am today.
Before becoming a full-time Weddings and Events Entertainer, I worked as a chef in Houston and was a member of Unite Here. Between 2018 and 2019, I worked at a gym and temporarily as a chef at a country club during a major tennis tournament. Even through the frustrations, disappointments, and uncertainty of those jobs, I always found myself coming back to weddings. At that point, I had already spent six years building my experience in the industry.
While living in Houston’s Third Ward, I participated in the EEDC Small Business Training Program for entrepreneurs. That program helped me develop a stronger understanding of business and gave me the confidence to pursue my dream full-time. During the program, I won the Elevator Pitch Contest and was selected to perform at our graduation ceremony—an experience that reinforced my belief that I was on the right path.
Then the pandemic happened. While it brought challenges to the events industry, it also gave me an opportunity to focus on the operational side of my business. I already had my personality, talent, and the relationships I had built over the years. During that time, I learned how to maximize those strengths and use my resources more effectively.
Every job and company I worked for taught me valuable lessons—not only what to do, but also what not to do. Those experiences helped me identify my strengths, improve the way I sell my services, and continue sharpening my craft.
When I eventually moved to San Antonio, I had to start over in a brand-new market without knowing anyone. Even then, the foundation I had built over the years allowed me to keep moving forward.
So, could I have started sooner? Maybe. But I truly believe the timing worked out exactly as it was supposed to. Every experience, challenge, and opportunity prepared me for where I am today. Looking back, the timing wasn’t just good—it was outstanding.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Ramone Dixon, owner of DJ Ramone Weddings and Events. I have been part of the wedding industry for 14 years, and my journey into this profession began because of my mom.
One day while she was at work, she randomly sent me a Craigslist post from someone looking for a wedding DJ—someone who had a broad knowledge of music and was willing to learn. At the time, neither of us could have imagined how much that opportunity would change my life. What started as a simple job posting became the foundation of a career that I am incredibly passionate about today.
Throughout my time in the wedding industry, I have remained obsessed with one idea: staying open-minded. Music is one of the most powerful ways people express themselves, and every culture, decade, and genre tells a different story. I have dedicated myself to continually learning and expanding my musical knowledge so I can better serve every couple and every audience I encounter.
While there are many moving parts in the wedding industry, one of the most important aspects is the relationships you build. Strong partnerships with fellow vendors, venue owners, and industry professionals are built on trust. That trust starts with being exceptionally good at what you do. Referrals are valuable, but what truly creates lasting relationships is delivering quality service, paying attention to the details that matter, and being transparent throughout the entire process. Those are the qualities that couples and clients appreciate most.
One of the greatest privileges of my career is creating the soundtrack to life’s most meaningful moments. Music has the power to set the tone, create emotion, and bring people together. I have the honor of helping shape experiences that couples and their guests will remember for years to come.
My passion for creativity naturally draws me to music, and I genuinely enjoy the process of turning ideas into unforgettable experiences through sound. My background in theatre has also played a significant role in my success. It taught me how to present myself with confidence, connect with audiences, read a room, and create an engaging atmosphere from beginning to end.
After 14 years in the wedding industry, I am still passionate about learning, growing, and finding new ways to serve my clients. Every wedding is unique, every couple has a story to tell, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help bring those stories to life through music, energy, and unforgettable moments.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the most important pivots I made as a business owner was becoming more connected to my local wedding community and finding marketing opportunities that were more accessible and relationship-driven than national platforms alone.
I was fortunate to build meaningful relationships through WeddingWire and The Knot, both with team members and fellow vendors within those networks. Those connections were valuable and helped me grow as a wedding professional. However, I eventually realized that I needed to become more directly connected to what was happening within my local market. That led me to Texas Weddings, which proved to be a much better fit for building relationships and staying engaged with couples, venues, and vendors throughout San Antonio and the surrounding areas.
In 2022, I experienced the best year of my business while living in Houston. Professionally, things were thriving. At the same time, my wife received a career opportunity in San Antonio that was simply too good to pass up. Relocating meant leaving behind a market where I had spent years building relationships, reputation, and momentum. It was a major transition that required patience, resilience, and a willingness to start over in many ways.
Fortunately, I was able to lean on the foundation I had built throughout my career. By staying true to who I am and continuing to provide exceptional service, I began establishing new relationships within the San Antonio wedding community. I was also blessed to earn the trust of one of the top DJ companies in Texas, allowing me to perform events on their behalf while continuing to grow my own brand. That support played a significant role in helping me navigate the transition successfully.
While San Antonio is different from Houston in many ways, I was prepared for the challenges that came with entering a new market. Houston’s diversity exposed me to a wide variety of cultures, traditions, and musical preferences, experiences that ultimately prepared me to adapt and succeed wherever I went.
Looking back, the move reinforced an important lesson: success in the wedding industry is not just about where you are located. It is about your ability to build relationships, earn trust, adapt to change, and consistently deliver excellence. Those principles helped me succeed in Houston, and they continue to help me grow in San Antonio today.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
One challenge I have learned to embrace throughout my career is working with couples whose primary language is different from my own. For example, my Spanish is not very strong. I do not speak it fluently, and I often struggle to fully understand it when it is spoken to me.
At first, that made me nervous when couples would reach out and ask if I would be willing to be part of their wedding day. What made those conversations even more meaningful was knowing that they were contacting me because they genuinely trusted me and believed I was the best fit for such an important occasion, despite the language barrier.
What gives me confidence is my commitment to preparation and understanding. While I may not speak every language, I have spent years learning and appreciating music from different cultures. I genuinely love the opportunity to experience traditions, customs, and celebrations that may be different from my own. Through weddings, I have been fortunate to work with families from many cultural backgrounds, and every experience has helped me grow both personally and professionally.
I have learned that successful events are built on communication, trust, and preparation. When I understand a couple’s expectations, the music they want to hear, the traditions that are important to them, and the overall vision for their celebration, I know I can deliver an exceptional experience.
My approach on a wedding day remains the same regardless of culture or language. My role is to lead, guide, and create a connection with the guests. Music has a unique ability to bring people together, and that connection often goes beyond words. By trusting my preparation, my experience, and my passion for serving people, I am able to put my best foot forward and help create a celebration that feels authentic, meaningful, and memorable for everyone involved.
