Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kristen Atkins. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kristen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s jump right into how you came up with the idea?
My ideas come from a mix of imagination, observation, and experience. I also like to combine representation which is so valuable and important to our culture and community right now. The goal I have is to not only make the story engaging and entertaining ,but to also reach the hearts and minds of young children when it comes to character building and self development. Growing up I absolutely loved to read- it tools me places that at time I couldn’t go and also cultures and people I had never seen. Writing was and still is a very special and powerful outlet for me. A simple thought about a tree in a park turns into an oasis of intricate moments in my mind. I was never doing this for the notoriety- I was doing this for children that were like me growing up. When I do succeed it will be because children are being secure in who and Who’s they are, comfortable and confident in themselves, and love the sparkle they have within.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am Kristen! I’ve been in the education field for over 10 years and worked or volunteered in some aspect with youth for as long as I can remember. Currently finishing my bachelor’s degree in Behavioral Science. Also the mom of two very creative, busy, quirky twins. We have an instagram page library_lookouts! We make recommendations on some awesome reads and even do story times! You can also follow the journey of my new book “Never Too Much Me” on Instagram as well. The handle for that is IG: (nevertoomuchme) We just love reading. So whether I’m writing, making up a story on the spot, or reading a fellow writer’s book it always goes back to my creativity and passion for reading and writing.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
The one lesson I had to unlearn is the moral of my newest book. There’s a quote that says “Why try to fit in when you were born to stand out”. Nothing rings more true than this in my life. There were countless times when I would dim my light to try and fit in with others. To be accepted by the majority and become one of them was where I wanted to belong. I wasn’t true to my self, my dreams, my own destiny. I wasn’t being my true authentic self. That’s what this book is about- embracing your individuality and accepting yourself through and through. The world needs you exactly as you are!

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and my mission is too make sure each and every child that comes in contact with a book I’ve written is too know that they are the best version of themselves. I want them to understand that mistakes happen, life gets messy, and through self discovery and bravery they learn. Hold tight to their big ideas, loud laughter, and being unique in each and every way! That’s the stuff that makes them sparkle! Embrace your individuality and never EVER dim your light! Be YOUR best you!
