We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Misty Jarnigan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Misty thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The journey to Krazzy Cakes began with my son, Jacob.
When he was born, I decided I wanted to make his birthday cake myself. I’ve always been a creative and crafty person, and I thought creating his cake would be a special way to celebrate him. The only problem was that I had never decorated a cake before.
With no formal training and no prior experience, I took on the challenge and taught myself the basics. While it wasn’t easy, I quickly discovered how much I loved the creative process. That first cake sparked a passion that would eventually grow into a business.
Wanting to learn more, I enrolled in cake decorating classes taught by Wilton instructors. Through those classes, I developed new skills and techniques while continuing to practice and experiment on my own. Before long, I was making cakes and cake pops for family gatherings and special occasions.
The response was overwhelmingly positive. Family members began requesting cakes for birthdays, holidays, and celebrations. Soon, friends started placing orders as well. What began as a hobby and a creative outlet steadily grew through word-of-mouth referrals and community support.
As demand continued to increase, Krazzy Cakes was born—a business built on creativity, hard work, and a genuine love for helping people celebrate life’s special moments. What started with one homemade birthday cake for my son has grown into a full-service cake and catering business that allows me to share my passion with others every day.

Misty, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Born and raised in East Tennessee, I grew up in the kitchen alongside my mother and grandmother, where I developed a love for cooking and baking that would later become my life’s work.
After the birth of my son, Jacob, I began baking for family and friends. What started as a passion quickly grew through word-of-mouth and community support, leading me to launch Krazzy Cakes in 2016. As demand expanded beyond custom cakes, the business evolved into Krazzy Cakes & Catering in 2019.
Today, I serve as both the baker and cake artist, creating custom cakes for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, showers, and special celebrations of all kinds. On the catering side, I work closely with clients to plan menus and provide delicious, homemade meals tailored to their events and guests.
I take pride in helping each client choose the perfect cake design and menu to fit their vision, style, and budget. Whether you’re planning an intimate gathering, a large wedding, or a corporate event, Krazzy Cakes & Catering offers full-service solutions designed to make your occasion memorable.
From custom cakes to complete catering services, I am dedicated to providing quality, creativity, and Southern hospitality in every order.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Operating a successful home-based business while maintaining a full-time nursing career has required dedication, organization, and a strong work ethic. For years, I have balanced 40+ hour workweeks as a nurse while building Krazzy Cakes & Catering into a thriving business that often feels like a second full-time job.
I am fortunate to have an incredible team by my side. Most of my staff also work full-time careers in the medical field, yet they consistently go above and beyond to help bring our clients’ events to life. Whether it’s early mornings, late nights, or burning the midnight oil before a big event, our team is committed to delivering exceptional service and quality

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the most exciting—and challenging—aspects of the cake and catering industry is keeping up with ever-changing trends. Wedding cakes and specialty cakes have evolved tremendously over the years, and what is considered the “must-have” design one season may be completely out of style the next.
The same is true in catering. Client preferences, menu selections, presentation styles, and event expectations are constantly changing. Staying current requires continuous learning, research, and a willingness to embrace new ideas while maintaining the quality and service our clients expect.
At Krazzy Cakes & Catering, we work hard to stay informed about the latest trends, techniques, and designs so we can offer our clients fresh and exciting options. At the same time, we appreciate that some trends never truly disappear—they simply come full circle.
This wedding season, we are especially excited to create a vintage-inspired wedding cake complete with the classic staircases and fountains that were once a staple of wedding receptions. Seeing a bride embrace a timeless design reminds us that every event is unique and every client’s vision deserves to be brought to life.
Whether it’s the newest trend making waves on social media or a cherished design from decades past, we are always ready to create something special. Our goal is to provide each client with a cake and catering experience that reflects their personality, style, and vision—no matter what era inspires it.
