We caught up with the brilliant and insightful SHIRAZ FAROOQ a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
SHIRAZ, appreciate you joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
The story of ColoWell America is one of resilience, family, and a desire to fundamentally change how patients experience medical care. Built from the ground up by Dr. Shiraz Farooq—a board-certified Colon and Rectal Surgeon who had been practicing in Tampa for over a decade—the practice was born out of a deeply personal journey.
The Catalyst: A Vision Born from Family
For Dr. Farooq, the decision to open a private practice wasn’t just a strategic career move. The true turning point was a heartbreaking family loss. When Dr. Farooq’s only brother—a cancer survivor—passed away, it left him and his parents navigating a profound void. In the wake of that tragedy, the family united with a shared, healing purpose: to turn the concept of ColoWell America into a reality
The goal was to create Tampa’s first premier colorectal practice that refused to choose between modern medicine and holistic wellness. Dr. Farooq wanted to blend state-of-the-art surgical and non-surgical expertise with preventative, natural care to treat the whole patient.
Main Steps to Establishment
Moving from the operating room to the helm of a new business required building a completely new foundation:
Defining a Holistic Model: The first step was operationalizing a unique care philosophy. This meant actively integrating nutrition and lifestyle into clinical treatment—specifically focusing on daily plant-based fiber (like ground flaxseed to build the gut biome) and the “Five Rites” (ancient Tibetan yoga-like practices) to improve patient vitality alongside traditional treatments.
Navigating the Bureaucracy: To make care accessible, the clinic had to undertake the notoriously complex and time-consuming process of teaming up and credentialing with major insurance providers.
Community Integration: Dr. Farooq and his team actively sought out local professional organizations. Networking became a crucial step in building a referral base and embedding the practice in the broader Tampa business ecosystem.
Key Challenges in the Early Days
The transition from a purely medical focus to medical entrepreneurship came with significant, real-world hurdles:
The Steep Business Learning Curve: Medical school does not teach you how to run a business. The team had to navigate completely unfamiliar administrative, financial, and operational paths while figuring out how to creatively advertise in a highly competitive market.
Assembling the Right Team: ColoWell America is a global concept with a specific culture. Finding staff who weren’t just looking for a clock-in/clock-out job—but who were genuinely committed to long-term growth and compassionate care—took time and patience.
The Pandemic Pivot: Just as the practice was celebrating its one-year anniversary and planning its first major expansion, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. It was a massive economic setback that forced the clinic to re-establish goals, pivot operations, and find entirely new ways to safely deliver care.
Looking Back: What We Would Do Differently
If there is one thing the early days taught the ColoWell team, it is the immense value of community mentorship. Eventually, Dr. Farooq found incredible support, education, and referrals from local Tampa business owners of all kinds. Knowing what they know now, leaning into that local business community earlier in the process would have smoothed out many of the initial growing pains. You don’t have to figure out the business side of medicine in a silo.
Advice for Young Professionals Starting a Practice
For any young physician or professional looking to open their own doors, the ColoWell America journey offers a blueprint for survival and growth:
Find Your Mentors Early: Don’t restrict your network to other doctors. Connect with local small business owners, entrepreneurs, and community organizations. The business of medicine is still a business, and outside perspectives are invaluable for growth.
Define Your Unique Value: For ColoWell, it was the marriage of top-tier surgical care with holistic, root-cause wellness. Don’t just be another clinic; figure out what distinct philosophy you are bringing to your patients’ lives and make it the core of your brand.
Prepare for the Unexpected: You might face a global pandemic just as you hit your stride. Build a resilient team that shares your core mission. When economic or operational setbacks inevitably occur, a unified team can pivot together without losing the practice’s identity.
Never Lose Sight of the Patient: Amidst insurance contracts, advertising budgets, and overhead, remember that listening to the patient’s whole story is your actual job. Real healing often requires addressing the root cause—physical, nutritional, and emotional—not just masking the immediate symptom.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Here is the updated version of the magazine profile, adjusted to focus on your professional evolution and the practice’s mission, while keeping the spotlight on your comprehensive medical, aesthetic, and wellness offerings.
Bridging Modern Medicine and Holistic Healing: The Story of ColoWell America
Tell our readers about yourself and how you got into your industry.
I am Dr. Shiraz Farooq, a board-certified Colon and Rectal Surgeon and the founder of ColoWell America right here in Tampa, Florida. After practicing medicine and performing surgery for over a decade, I realized that the traditional healthcare model often rushes patients through the system, focusing on managing isolated symptoms rather than treating the individual. I wanted to step out and build a practice where patients felt heard, supported, and viewed as whole people. That desire to bridge the gap between advanced medical intervention and proactive wellness became the foundation for ColoWell America.
What type of products and services do you provide, and what problems do you solve for your clients?
At ColoWell America, we have evolved far beyond a traditional medical clinic; we are a comprehensive destination for internal health, physical optimization, and aesthetic confidence. We solve the problem of fragmented healthcare by addressing the whole patient from the inside out through four main pillars:
1. Expert Proctology and Gastrointestinal Care
We provide state-of-the-art colorectal and gastrointestinal interventions. This includes essential preventative care like colonoscopies and upper GI endoscopies, alongside minimally invasive and painless treatments for common issues like hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and fistulas. My goal as a surgeon is actually to keep you out of the operating room whenever possible by treating the root cause of GI distress.
2. Advanced Medical Aesthetics & Body Sculpting
We believe that when you feel good internally, you should feel confident externally. We utilize cutting-edge BTL technology for non-invasive aesthetic transformations, including:
EMSCULPT NEO: A dual-action treatment for simultaneous fat reduction and muscle enhancement.
EMFACE & EXION: Facial rejuvenation treatments that naturally reduce wrinkles and tighten skin without needles or downtime.
Intimate Wellness (EMSELLA & EMFEMME 360): Revolutionary treatments for pelvic floor strengthening. EMSELLA provides non-invasive solutions for urinary incontinence and male lifestyle enhancement, while EMFEMME focuses on vaginal rejuvenation and restoring intimate wellness.
3. Medical Weight Loss & Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)
Metabolic and hormonal decline shouldn’t be an accepted part of aging. We offer medically supervised weight loss programs utilizing breakthrough medications like Semaglutide and Tirzepatide to regulate appetite and boost metabolism. Alongside this, our customized Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) programs help both men and women restore their natural hormonal balance, drastically improving mood, energy, and overall vitality.
4. Peptides, Plant Medicine, and Functional Wellness
To truly heal the body at a cellular level, we offer advanced Peptide Therapy—using targeted amino acid chains to signal the body to repair tissue, boost immunity, and accelerate recovery. We are also proud to be pioneers in plant medicine. As the first clinical practice in Tampa to offer high-quality, hemp-derived CBD food supplements directly in our office, we also work with patients to recommend compassionate medical marijuana for qualifying conditions. Furthermore, we offer TMS with EXOMIND—a cutting-edge magnetic pulse therapy to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
What sets you apart from others in your field?
What makes ColoWell America entirely unique is our refusal to choose between cutting-edge Western medicine and holistic wellness. We seamlessly blend the two.
We integrate nutrition, lifestyle, and advanced science into our clinical treatment plans. Whether we are proactively educating a patient on rebuilding their gut biome with plant-based fiber, utilizing peptide therapies for cellular repair, or incorporating ancient yoga-like practices for daily vitality, our approach is entirely integrative. You won’t find another clinic that can address a complex gastrointestinal issue, optimize your hormones, and utilize state-of-the-art technology to rebuild your core and pelvic floor all under one roof.
What are you most proud of?
I am incredibly proud of the resilient, compassionate team we have built and the culture we have cultivated. Opening a private medical practice is a steep uphill climb, and just as we were celebrating our one-year anniversary, the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Navigating that unprecedented crisis while ensuring our patients still received critical, uninterrupted care tested everything we had. Surviving that era, pivoting our operations, and continuing to grow into a premier, multi-faceted practice without losing sight of our core mission is my proudest professional achievement.
What are the main things you want potential patients and readers to know about your brand?
The most important thing I want people to know is that your health and vitality are in your hands, and you do not have to settle for care that makes you feel like just another number.
At ColoWell America, our brand is built on empowerment, education, and comprehensive care. We want you to understand how your internal gut health, your hormonal balance, and your mental well-being directly impact your physical reality. When you walk through our doors, you are entering a judgment-free space where we will listen to your whole story. True healing requires addressing the physical, nutritional, and emotional aspects of your life, and we are fully equipped to walk that entire path with you.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
For a multi-faceted practice like ColoWell America, growth hasn’t come from a single marketing campaign, but from a strategic, dual-approach that connects deeply with both the local business community and our patients themselves.
Here is what has been our most effective strategy for growing our clientele:
1. Deep Integration into the Local Business Community
In the early days, we realized that medicine shouldn’t operate in a silo. One of our most powerful growth engines has been building genuine relationships with local Tampa business owners, entrepreneurs, and professional organizations.
By actively networking outside of just the medical field, we turned local business leaders into organic brand ambassadors. They learned about our unique approach—combining advanced proctology with aesthetics and hormone therapy—and began referring their own networks, clients, and families to us. Word-of-mouth within a trusted local business community carries immense weight.
2. Cross-Pollination of Services (The “Inside-Out” Journey)
Because we offer an ecosystem of health—ranging from colorectal surgery and gut health to advanced aesthetics (like EMSCULPT NEO and EMFACE), HRT, and Peptides—our best source of growth is often our existing patient base.
A patient might initially come to us for a medical issue, like chronic GI distress or a colonoscopy. Once they experience our compassionate, root-cause approach and see that we also offer metabolic weight loss, hormone replacement, and body sculpting, they naturally transition into those wellness services. Conversely, someone coming in for a non-invasive aesthetic or pelvic floor treatment (like EMSELLA) learns about our functional medicine and gut health expertise. By solving multiple problems for one person, they become lifelong advocates who refer others for entirely different legs of our practice.
3. High-Value Patient Education and Empowerment
Gastrointestinal issues, intimate wellness, and hormone decline can be deeply personal and sometimes uncomfortable topics for people to talk about. We found that heavy clinical advertising doesn’t work nearly as well as education.
We focus on creating content and clinical conversations that demystify these topics. When you educate potential patients on why they are feeling fatigued, how their gut biome affects their mental health, or how non-invasive technology can fix urinary incontinence, you build immediate trust. Patients don’t feel like they are being sold a service; they feel empowered with a solution. That trust turns them into loyal patients who confidently tell their friends, “You need to go see the team at ColoWell.”

If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
Yes, without a single doubt. If I could go back, I would choose exactly the same path—both the profession of medicine and the specialty of colon and rectal surgery.
Gastrointestinal health is the absolute foundation of human wellness. It has long been said that “all disease begins in the gut,” and modern science continues to prove that to be true. Being a colorectal surgeon has allowed me to make profound, immediate differences in my patients’ lives. Often, I am able to relieve them of silent, chronic pain or digestive distress that they have been masking or living with for years. Giving someone their quality of life back is an incredibly rewarding experience.
However, what I appreciate most about my path is how it organically evolved. My rigorous background as a traditional surgeon gave me the deep, clinical understanding of human anatomy and physiology necessary to safely expand into functional medicine, medical weight loss, hormone therapy, and advanced aesthetics.
If I hadn’t started in the operating room, I wouldn’t have the holistic perspective I have today. Understanding how to heal the body surgically is exactly what taught me how to help patients avoid surgery whenever possible. It showed me that you can’t just fix a physical issue and ignore the patient’s nutrition, hormonal balance, or mental well-being. The traditional medical foundation I built is exactly what allowed ColoWell America to become the comprehensive, integrative practice it is today. I wouldn’t change a thing.
