We recently connected with Brandon Bland and have shared our conversation below.
Brandon , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I’d love for my legacy to be one of gigantic size. That my reach heavily outweighed my talents. A leader, a community man, and a great friend. If I’ve touched lives with my effort and my story and the way i go after my goals everyday i know that will lead to a better world and more opportunities realized by more ppl daily. My legacy should read. He tried to assist any and everybody and to provide chances to be the best them they could be once they came within eye or ear shot of Smoove.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Smoove Moves Training has a rich background. Started from two trainers myself and my brother Josh who’s still in Cali where we got everything moving. Two semi pro players looking to stay around the game and influence the next keepers of the game to play the game the right way. Seeing gaps in the development of a lot of kids we decided to join forces right in my living room at the time in Oakland ca. we spent hours and days coming up wit a name until Smoove Moves came to fruition. From there we took our knowledge from being a part of warriors camps and other organizations reached out for our help and we built our footprint in the area. It was at this time that i began to think bigger. Began to notice the impact we could grow to and i decide i wanted the company to be country wide and eventually world wide. Since our inception. We have worked with many of your favorite trainers online and have trained or worked with some of the top players in The country year in and year out. There is a difference though Here at Smoove Moves we don’t just provide world class quality training we offer the wrap around services of being guardians big brothers and community minded leaders. As we continue to grow, more professionals frm all aspects of the game and outside of it as well will come to speak to kids and teach them about how the game of basketball opens up the world to you. You never know what working hard being a great person and having a heart for others will afford you. It’s the Smoove way ! Most kids won’t play professionally but they can still provide for themselves and their future families by having a plan of playing basketball doesn’t pan out how they hoped. Basketball makes the world go round. Better basketball players and minds keep it going around.
Next steps are finding a dedicated gym space in our current areas to establish headquarters so we are actively seeking advice networking and mentoring on moving forward to next steps.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
For me it was my dream of wanting to be a pro player still burning within me. I held several jobs when i moved to Cali. I literally got there on a random phone call frm an old friend and a flight days later. I had zero ideas at to what i was gonna do i just knew wat i was doing wasn’t working. I came to cali worked some dead end jobs learned how to be a political advisor then a socio-emotional agent within a non profit that landed me in schools working with at risk students. I used every experience to build the backbone of what i wanted Smoove moves to be. Not just another run of the mill basketball trainer i wanted to create avenues for ppl to facilitate their dreams and to do it with help frm their peers and elders.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
So you know how i was telling you i parlayed other jobs into what i do now? So yeah it was a lot of times of adjustment. When i first started training i didn’t have money or knowledge of marketing so i just tried word of mouth. That went so slow i had to work a regular job and an overnight job just to have the availability on weekends to train. Everyone knows how expensive Cali is. I worked these to jobs in between payin 1600 a month for the equivalent of a small hallway to sleeping in my car. Once i was able to save some money i decided to move back home and sort of start over. Well let me tell you that didn’t go as planned. When you leave you’re really almost forgotten. I came back to not as many friends or connections to be able to immediately go into success. I got under another trainer out here and for a year i attempted to learn and get clients while using small lead apps on my phone. Well we all know wat happened next COVID. No gym no kids no money. I was drowning and didn’t want to work another type job because i felt like i moved and failed. I decided to take an overnight job at a hotel just to provide me with day availability. Low and behold i found a gym that was open through a friend. I have never looked back since. God has blessed me to be able to find clients , have clients walk in, current clients are doing great getting talked about and they mentioned. The brand with their success. We endured sleeping in a car working multiple jobs driving across the country and a global pandemic. But we are still here. That’s what i call a Smoove move !!
