We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Akilah Walker. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Akilah below.
Akilah , appreciate you joining us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
Establishing my own practice started before I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I started my personal brand in 2015, posting photos of my hairstyles, unknowingly becoming a hair influencer before it was a trend. I enjoyed creating unique looks for myself and was surprised that others wanted to replicate the styles that I was sharing on Instagram. Thus, Hair by Akilah was born. I realized I had a talent for replicating styles I saw on celebrities and created a Thumbtack account for others to schedule appointments with me. Marketing was such a challenge because I had no idea how to work Instagram. My only advantage was that there weren’t any algorithms, so as long as I posted every day, my photos would be at the top of the timeline. I didn’t have a workspace and became a traveling hairstylist, but I was not licensed and couldn’t charge the prices I wanted to cover traveling expenses and supplies. I decided to enroll in Cosmetology school. I believe everything happens for a reason, and trial and error are necessary to understand how to pivot to stay on track with knowing your worth. Education is key. Knowledge gave me the power to make decisions that positioned me for my next investment, creating hair growth products.

Akilah , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Akilah ‘Nyuki’ Walker, and I am the Founder & Hair Wellness Specialist at Nyuki Hair Rejuvenation and Wellness, a Trichology Practitioner, and a Community Health Advocate. My work sits at the intersection of hair health, wellness education, nutrition, and community empowerment.
My journey into this field was deeply personal, beginning with my own diagnosis of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD). My PMDD diagnosis resulted in chronic anemia, vitamin deficiency, hair loss, cystic acne, and multiple ER visits. Over the years, I observed how many individuals, particularly women, were struggling with hair loss, scalp disorders, stress-related shedding, and chronic health concerns that often manifested through changes in their hair and scalp. I realized that hair health is rarely just about hair but a reflection of overall wellness. That understanding inspired me to pursue a more holistic approach that combines scalp health, wellness education, nutritional awareness, and community advocacy.
Through Nyuki Hair Rejuvenation and Wellness, I provide hair and scalp wellness services, educational workshops, wellness programming, free scalp health consultations, and community-based initiatives designed to improve both confidence and quality of life. I also create wellness-focused content and events that address topics such as nutrition, self-care, food accessibility, and preventive health practices.
The problems I help solve go beyond appearance. Many of my clients come to me feeling frustrated, discouraged, or overwhelmed by hair loss, scalp discomfort, or a lack of reliable information. My goal is to help them understand the “why” behind their concerns, provide education, and create realistic wellness-centered solutions that support their long-term goals. I believe informed clients make empowered decisions. What sets me apart is my commitment to treating the whole person, not just the symptom. I take a wellness-focused, educational, and compassionate approach that recognizes the connection between physical health, emotional well-being, nutrition, lifestyle, and hair health. Whether I am working one-on-one with a client or leading a community wellness initiative, my focus is always on creating meaningful and sustainable outcomes.
I am especially proud of the community impact of my work. From attending and organizing wellness events and educational programs to advocating for greater access to health and nutrition resources, I have used my platform to serve individuals who may otherwise lack access to these conversations and services. Helping people reclaim confidence while also empowering them with knowledge is one of the most rewarding aspects of what I do. Above all, I want people to know that my brand is built on education, empowerment, and wellness. I am passionate about helping people understand that healthy hair begins with a healthy foundation. Whether someone is seeking support for their hair growth journey, looking to improve their overall wellness, or searching for a trusted advocate and educator, my mission is to provide guidance, resources, and solutions that help them thrive from the inside out.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Most people do not know that the health and beauty industry is seasonal and thrives on trends. That was a hard lesson for me to learn as an upcoming cosmetologist. To combat the slow seasons, I decided to create my own hair growth product line. I did not know the benefits of Nyuki Oil, but I knew that I had done 6 months of research and development, and went to seminars about hair rejuvenation. Six months after creating Nyuki Oil, I performed a service that contributed to my clients’ hair falling out. This moment in my life was about faith and trust. I created my first product, Nyuki Oil, out of faith, and my client trusted me to grow her hair back and continued to be serviced by me. To this day I am grateful for her because without her I wouldnt have answered my calling, to be a Hair Wellness Specialist or contuined my education to be a licensed Trichology Practitioner.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Creating my own product line was not easy, and perfecting formulations takes years. I was discouraged by the many batches unable to be sold because the quality was not consistent with previous batches. I took many risks to market my products even during the pandemic. But the worst part was not building a team. I was burned out and completely stopped creating products because I had an overwhelming amount of orders and was unable to meet the demand. I decided to relocate, enroll in college, and rebrand my business. I learned through resilience that I am a key part of my business, and if I am not well, neither is my business. Yet, the best part is that I can start over, and so can my business. This perspective gave me a new outlook on my brand. Which is why I changed the name from Nyuki Hair Studio to Nyuki Hair Rejuvenation and Wellness. I expanded the product line to include Herbal tea blends, wellness supplements, meal planning, and community resources from the network of healthcare professionals that I met and who have supported me along the way, Nyuki Nation.
