We caught up with the brilliant and insightful James Salvati a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi James, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My direction as an illustrator and designer was shaped by a defining moment just before I graduated from ArtCenter College of Design. On the Friday before graduation, I called the the best design studio in Los Angeles, even maybe the world: Dyer/Kahn.
That following Monday—immediately after graduation—they hired me. I stepped straight into the professional world, working on the film Cat People campaign. It was an intense and formative experience at Dyer/Kahan, I had the rare opportunity to work under remarkable designers, including Clive Piercy, Andy Engel, Dale Sizer and Rod Dyer. Being surrounded by that level of talent and expectation pushed me to grow quickly, both creatively and professionally.
Rod, in particular, had a work environment that was both demanding and open. They even asked me join them for lunch with director Paul Schrader—an experience that, at the time, felt surreal and underscored just how extraordinary that studio environment was.
That moment— being immersed in such a high level of creative energy—set my trajectory, my path. After working there for a month or so, Clive called Tommy Steele at Steelworks, then Capitol Records and now I am working and immersed in the Music industry, right after graduation. The Film industry, Music industry and the Publishing industry have been a common denominator my whole career, even now.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
A native of Soutern California I was raised in a home surrounded by art, where creativity felt natural, a normal thing. My uncles were architects, and their influence shaped how I saw structure and design from an early age. My uncle Dennis, had a big impact on me—he gave me my first surfboard and shared his massive body art with us, both of which helped in my path as an artist.
During my time at junior college in North County San Diego, I initially pursued architecture but struggled. One drafting instructor suggested I take an illustration class. That class, taught by legendary animator and illustrator Everett Peck, that changed everything.
My girlfriend Linda and I connected with Everett, and through his mentorship, he encouraged us to attend ArtCenter College of Design. We both did—and from there, my career began.
Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work with nearly all the major movie studios, building long-standing relationships with companies like Disney and Warner Bros. I’ve also collaborated across the music industry, New York theaters, and publishing.
I began in the surf industry right out of school, but when that world shifted, I transitioned into film, where I found lasting creative fulfillment.
I see myself as a designer who can illustrate—someone who solves problems visually and builds ideas from there. Now, after a long and rewarding career, In addition I teach at ArtCenter, passing on what I’ve learned, just as my mentors once did for me.
Phil Hays hall of fame illustrator and chair at ACCD gave me his class to teach and introduced me to Andy Warhol, which turned into a years worth of work until Andy’s passing. I have many projects that I am proud of, but my hundreds of Illustrations for WB Harry Potter in one of them.
That was game changing and the WB has been one of my longest clients. The diversity in my work from Sony Pictures and Sony/Fox TV to all the other films I have worked on as a Visual Development artist has kept me extremely busy throughout my career. Radio City Music Hall, Lincoln Center and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, The 100 year anniversary posters for the Birth of the Negro League are some of my highlights.
I have a wonderful connection with Disney at DFA that is lifelong. I am also currently developing IP’s for movies with a few producers and writers, that has been fun and actually my new direction.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I aim to continue creating and developing original intellectual properties, Illustrations and fine art that reflect both innovation in my personal expression. I don’t want to stop producing, it is in my personalty/DNA and I think about Art all the time. My goal is to build a body of work that evolves over time, blending storytelling, visual impact, and meaningful concepts. Through consistent practice and exploration, I am always learning and adjusting to the change in our industry to refine my voice while expanding into new mediums and audiences, that includes Analog and Digital work, I love them both.
I am committed to pushing creative boundaries, maintaining authenticity, and turning ideas into lasting, recognizable works that resonate with others and contribute to a larger artistic legacy. That is my continued creative journey.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I think I missed the social media boat. I have Instagram since the birth of it, but never used it. I’ve built my career primarily through word of mouth, having incredible agents and artist represenatives, with clients passing my name along and keeping a steady flow of work. That approach reflects the strength of my work and relationships. At the same time, I recognize that not building a strong social media presence may have limited my broader reach and visibility over time. Younger people and students have often encouraged me to be more active on social media, and I see the value in that. I want to balance both—continuing to rely on genuine connections while also developing an online presence that showcases my intellectual properties, illustrations and fine art. Maybe even start archiving my legacy that way with the instagram account I never used.
