We were lucky to catch up with Kelly Houseman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kelly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
One of the most meaningful things I’ve ever helped a client realize wasn’t advice at all… it was that they already knew the answer. Therapy isn’t about telling people what to do; it’s about creating enough safety, clarity, and self-trust for them to hear themselves again. Watching someone choose themselves after years of self-abandonment will always be the most rewarding part of this work.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I recently celebrated the 10 year anniversary of my private practice Kelly Houseman Counseling. What sets me apart as a therapist is that I don’t believe healing comes from being judged, fixed, or talked down to. I create a space where clients feel deeply seen while still being challenged to grow. My approach is honest, compassionate, and empowering while helping people reconnect with themselves, break unhealthy patterns, and build the kind of life and relationships that actually feel aligned. Therapy with me is less about “advice” and more about helping people develop the confidence to trust their own voice again.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would choose this job 100 times over. In fact, I always say that I never even think of being a therapist as a job. It’s truly a blessing for me to be able to walk alongside clients on their journey.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Beyond education and clinical knowledge, the therapists who tend to make the biggest impact are the ones who know how to make people feel safe, understood, and genuinely seen. Clients rarely remember every intervention or theory. Rather, they remember how they felt in the room with you. Authenticity, emotional attunement, consistency, and the ability to build real human connection are what separate a good therapist from a transformative one. The most successful therapists aren’t the ones with all the answers; they’re the ones who can sit with people in their hardest moments without judgment while still helping them move forward.
