We recently connected with Nicole Chaplin and have shared our conversation below.
Nicole, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
One of the biggest risks I took was moving to NYC right after obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Miami. I had no job lined up and a little money saved up. However, I had a huge dream of making something out of myself. I initially started my Marketing career in the music industry and like most industries, who you know plays a huge part in where you can end up sometimes. Luckily, I had met someone who was on vacation in Miami, the year I graduated and thank goodness I kept in touch. That one person ended up being my way in to the music industry which kicked off my career in business..
That person introduced me to his friend who happened to be looking for a personal assistant the exact same week I moved to NYC. Even with no previous work experience this person took a chance on me to be their assistant at Universal Music Group in midtown Manhattan. My career quickly soared from being an assistant, to working in music publishing to then be hired by Roc-A-Fella Records for my cross-marketing and strategic planning skills and being able to work on Jay-Z and Kanye West’s campaigns.
I soon discovered my love for fitness was just as strong as my love for music and began to take all the skills I learned in the music industry and took a chance on myself to become a personal trainer and start my own business. The timing was right and I had made so many amazing contacts I knew it would take off for me if I continued to work hard and have faith. Once I went into entrepreneur mode, my life went into overdrive. Not only did becoming a personal trainer expose me to new avenues but I was able to assist others with their health and see life transformations happen because of the services and care I provided all my clients with. This became a satisfaction that I had never felt before I applied all the marketing skills I learned from the music industry into my fitness career and birthed, Nixolition, The Fit Coalition. My success allowed me to move from NYC to Miami and expand to a virtual platform for clients globally, You have to take risks and go for it.
Nicole, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Jamaican girl who believes that anything is possible. I provide my clients with positive energy in every personal training session whether its a group session or one on 1. I believe that the healthier you are, the better you feel and there is nothing that can stop you but you. I encourage all my client to speak life over themselves. The books I write have the same context and when I facilitate speaking engagements I carry the same energy. We are here for a purpose. Use your life for good.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What has helped my business reputation is that I am punctual. I start and finish on time. My team knows that time is very important to me. Whether its a business meeting, organizing a class schedule or facilitating and event, everyone who knows me knows, be on time. Respect my time because I respect yours.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
The book “Start Finishing” by Charlie Gilkey changed how I managed my time. I now use the Five Project Rule to prioritize my daily schedule and be at peace with the work I choose not to do. This book helped me gather more time for me and focus on building a legacy for myself, my son and my family.
