Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mitchell Bennett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mitchell, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
It began as a practical idea in a very full season of life. I was working a full-time job, Katie was home with our newborn, and we were looking for a way to create a little extra income for our family. I had a background and passion for photography, and Katie had a growing interest in business and entrepreneurship. She was the one who really saw the opportunity and encouraged us to turn my skill into something more than a hobby.
So in the beginning, we simply started with what we had. We used the gear we owned, said yes to opportunities, and learned as we went. There was no perfect launch plan or polished business model. It was a lot of weekends, and figuring things out one step at a time while juggling jobs, family life, and responsibilities.
At first, most of our focus was on building experience. We photographed sessions, served anyone who trusted us, and paid close attention to what clients valued most. At the same time, we had to learn everything that comes with running a business: pricing, communication, contracts, marketing, taxes, workflow, editing, and how to consistently create a quality experience.
As the business grew, so did Katie’s passion for photography. What started as supporting the business from the sidelines turned into us working side by side. We realized we genuinely loved building something together, and that became a major turning point.
For several years, the business remained a side venture while we continued learning and refining our craft. We invested in education, upgraded equipment when we could, studied successful businesses, and slowly built a reputation through word of mouth and consistent service.
By late 2016, we had reached the point where we could step into the business full time. That was when we made a clear decision to focus heavily on weddings. We had always loved marriage, family, and the significance of wedding days, so it felt like the right fit both personally and professionally.
In 2019 we attended a conference and met a mentor who blew our minds that people could charge $5k, $10k, or $25k for wedding photography. She was living proof. At the time, we spent 80% of our time on wedding photography but that was only 15-20% of our income. We realized there were people actually making a living wage off of photographing weddings. That was a huge turning point in how we operated.
From there, we became much more intentional. We invested in mentorship, networking, branding, systems, and elevating the client experience. We treated every wedding as an opportunity to improve, serve people well, and strengthen the kind of business we wanted to build.

Mitchell, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are Mitchell and Katie Bennett, the husband-and-wife team behind The Bennetts. We are wedding photographers who specialize in capturing genuine moments with a timeless, refined style. Our heart is in documenting weddings, marriages, and the meaningful relationships that surround them.
Our business began from a simple season of life. I loved photography, Katie had a growing passion for entrepreneurship, and together we saw the opportunity to build something meaningful for our family. What started as a side business gradually became our full-time calling as we discovered how much we loved working together and serving couples during one of the most important days of their lives.
Our imagery reflects the abundance of a wedding day: the joy of family and friends, laughter, thoughtful details, incredible food and drink, heartfelt emotion, and memories that only grow more valuable with time.
We believe great photographs come from more than technical skill. They come from trust, connection, and taking the time to notice the subtle moments that help tell the full story of the day. Rather than capturing only isolated highlights, we create imagery that feels complete, cohesive, and deeply personal.
We also know that weddings can feel overwhelming. One of the greatest ways we serve our clients is by bringing calm, confidence, and steady guidance throughout the process. We help couples feel comfortable, present, and free to enjoy their day knowing it is being documented in a distinct creative style.
What sets us apart is the perspective we bring as a husband-and-wife team. We offer two creative viewpoints, shared experience, and a deep appreciation for marriage, family, and meaningful connection. That shapes not only how we photograph a wedding, but how we care for the people in front of our cameras.
Our goal is simple: to create photographs that feel timeless and honest, while delivering an experience that is thoughtful, joyful, and memorable from beginning to end.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Let’s be honest, our ultimate goal is to provide for our family of six. That’s a tough one, but we’re almost there, which is incredible.
Professionally, we have a lot of goals. Right now, one of our biggest goals is providing couples with an even better story of their day. We live in the age of TikTok, Pinterest, and Instagram. There are a lot of photographers out there, and we have spent a lot of time studying and mimicking each other. We don’t want to be that; we want images that capture the abundance that you find on a wedding day. Abundant family and friends, emotions, food and drink, celebrations, and so much more. Our perspective is unique, and that has to be shown in our work, and we own that.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Our Christian morals and values guide everything we do. We hold tightly to simple truths: everyone deserves to be loved, gossip has no place here, work should be done well and viewed as a valuable life skill, follow-through means doing what you say you will do, and there is always more to learn, so never aim to be the smartest person in the room.
These principles are easy to say, but much harder to live out consistently. We have worked hard to practice what we consider foundational truths. Over time, people recognize that consistency and place their full trust in us.
