We were lucky to catch up with Wakane Luke recently and have shared our conversation below.
Wakane , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
It’s not like I suddenly realized I wanted to do it. It’s more that it’s all I’ve ever known and all I’ve wanted to do since I was little. My environment was very unique. My mom was a singer, and my dad was a radio DJ. I grew up in a space where music was always there for me to feel.

Wakane , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always known I wanted to sing. I was born on a small island, but I’ve wanted to challenge myself as an artist since I was young. That’s why I’ve listened to many different types of music, across languages and eras. I truly believe that music represents no color, no borders, and no religion. It’s about feeling the art through listening.
Because this is such a difficult industry, I’ve experienced working with the wrong producers, creators, and many scammers. Those experiences made me realize how much I love what I do. I choose to learn from them and keep moving forward.
I may not have a large following, but I have strong supporters and a close family who have been part of my journey since I was very young. I’m incredibly proud of their support, and also proud to be one of the first Japanese singers to perform the American national anthem for multiple professional teams, law enforcement events, and at many stadiums. I have also toured as a reggae and recording artist.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I have a lot of experience singing for large crowds, but the reward doesn’t come from the numbers. It comes from the connection, the response I receive from the audience, and even seeing people moved to tears after hearing my voice. That is the most rewarding part, and it’s what keeps me going.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Social media can be tough, but I’m choosing to focus on what I love and believe in and trusting the process.
None of this would mean anything without my audience and supporters. I’m so grateful to be able to do what I love and share the beauty of culture and art with you all.
Thank you for being part of this journey!
