We recently connected with Dr. Denise Wiesner and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Denise , appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
I grew up with a mother who was a Songwriter, however, I veered off and became a Dr. of Chinese Medicine, Certified sex coach, exercise physiologist and all things health related. When my husband died of Cancer, 14 years ago, I took a writing workshop. I felt so out of my comfort zone, shaking when I had to stand up in front of the class and read my writing.
I felt so out of place with the poets, paid authors and seasoned writers that I wondered why I decided to take the class.
I used to call my mother and read her ALL my writings and you know what she said to me? She told me that I was an excellent writer and coming from my mother who never had anything nice to say to me, that was a compliment. In September she passed away at age 92, and it was then that I decided to publish some of my poems on substack. And why that might now seem like a risk to many of you, it is to me, especially because the first entry poem is called, What happened to my Labia. So there it is,

Dr. Denise , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have been a Dr. of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine for over 32 years. I have a background as an exercise physiologist. I treat women’s health, pain and supportive cancer care. I am also a certified sex coach and the author of the book, Conceiving with Love. I work with women from adolescence , through fertility to menopause. I specialize in natural solutions to all women’s health. I am also a certified dry needler and that means I treat pelvic floor dysfunction!
I love my profession and delight in working with both women and men who have issues with their health including digestive, immune dysfunction , chronic inflammation etc. In this world of high stress, many of the patient I see also come to me for anxiety issues.
The treatments are relaxing and helpful for our bodies to heal. I also am an herbalist and write my own custom herbal formulas. Happy to help you!!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There are so many lessons when owning your own business. I had an office manager for many years when my business partner and husband died. I didn’t know how to run the front desk because I was busy raising 2 children on my own. I hired someone who significantly helped me until she didn’t.
I know people tell you that you need to know ” how” your business runs yourself so everyone is replaceable. Here was my mistake. I
I didn’t know how to run my front desk and was advised by my office manager who made decisions on my behalf. I was desperate to keep her at all costs because she knew how to run my office and I had no clue.
Skip to the future, She decided to work part time and manage a new person who became the new office manager. This woman changed my life and together we unraveled the front desk and I changed my on line billing program which then allowed me to not need an office manager any more.

If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
Yes, If I could go back I would choose Chinese Medicine. I think it is an incredible profession because it looks at the body as a whole : body, mind and spirit.
It has solutions that western medicine doesn’t have that are gentler on the body and together eastern plus western medicine can help so many conditions without the need for strong drugs .
I love women’s health because there are so many herbal prescriptions that can help. Western doctors only have birth control pill, antibiotics and surgery to help women but in my profession, I have helped women with extreme menstrual pain, extreme bleeding in menstruation and other conditions just with Chinese Medicine.
