Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kyshaun Whitaker. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kyshaun, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’d say it started early, but I didn’t fully recognize it at the time. I was always drawn to creating—just naturally gravitating toward it. The turning point came when I realized I was putting more time, energy, and emotion into this than anything else. It stopped feeling like something I ‘liked’ and started feeling like something I needed to do. That’s when I knew I had to pursue it professionally.

Kyshaun, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a rapper and creative rooted in a 90s West Coast sound, blended with modern soul and R&B. I got into music as a way to express real-life experiences—just putting thoughts and emotions into something tangible. But over time, it became more than just an outlet. Once I saw how my sound and message could connect with people on a deeper level, I knew I wanted to pursue it seriously.
What I create is all about feeling and authenticity. My music carries that classic West Coast influence—smooth, laid-back, storytelling-driven—but it’s layered with modern soul and R&B elements that bring emotion and melody into it. It’s not just about what I’m saying, it’s about how it feels when you hear it. I want people to vibe with it, but also relate to it.
I don’t just focus on making tracks—I focus on building a sound and an identity. For collaborators and listeners, I bring something that feels timeless but still current. A lot of artists either chase nostalgia or chase trends—I try to bridge both in a way that feels natural and true to me.
What sets me apart is that balance: I can give you something smooth and soulful, but still grounded in real stories and real perspective. There’s intention behind every record, every visual, every move.
What I’m most proud of is staying consistent in my sound while continuing to grow. I’ve been able to evolve without losing the core of what makes my music mine.
At the end of the day, I want people to know that my music is genuine. It’s inspired by real moments, real influences, and a real love for the craft. I’m not just making songs—I’m creating a sound that people can live with and come back to.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn the idea that I needed validation before I could move like a professional. Early on, I would second-guess my sound, my style, even my decisions, waiting for people to co-sign it. The backstory is just being new and not fully trusting your own vision yet.
At some point, I realized nobody’s going to believe in it if I don’t. Once I started trusting my instincts and committing to my sound, everything became more focused and more real.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part for me is creating something real and seeing it connect with someone else. When a song I made from a personal place ends up meaning something to somebody I’ve never met—that’s different. It reminds me that music goes beyond just sound, it’s experience and emotion. That kind of connection is what makes it worth it.
