We recently connected with Tamryne Jefferson and have shared our conversation below.
Tamryne , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
Best investment I’ve made is the time I spent doing what I loved even though it meant wasting time on contracts that didn’t result in financial gain but were my stepping stools to the next stage in my career!
When I first started getting contract work as a creative, I was screwed over each time. Spent countless hours planning and organizing the business, drove to multiple locations with a gas tank that never went above quarter tank, pitching clients marketing ideas, creating content, and enjoying every second. From assisting creative entrepreneurs with their start-ups to marketing for established small businesses like restaurants. Reminder, this was all for free. Multiple times I was told “You’ll get paid with the next sale.”
There was one contractor gig I did, where I worked with a great business woman, or so I thought. I was assisting her with securing clients to highlight on her website. After working with her, red flags began to surface but I ignored them because I loved the work I was doing. Red flags from small weird ones like jumping out of pictures and any video, to big ones like always having an excuse for not paying me, and being super responsive until held accountable or pay was mentioned. There were multiple clients who advised her (in front of me), if it wasn’t for my pitch, she would’ve lost their business. And still no pay. My husband looked at me and said “Its been time for you to get paid. Move on.” That’s all I needed… after battling in my head for a few more days.. I agreed.
When you start off, the experience matters more than the money. Plus, when it’s something you love, you will do it for free! This is when I learned an important lesson. Investments are sacrifices that produce. SMART Investments are sacrifices that produce success. When I review investments, in addition to using SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time), I may provide a “free period” of time I am willing to invest for free. However, that is a case by case basis. 95% of the time, financial receipts are required.
Investing my time in all those experiences paved the way for other opportunities within the film industry, community theatres, and contract work with community centers and churches. Investing time in what I love is my best investment!

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
