We were lucky to catch up with Kim Craven recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I am working on a portraits project call “Over 50”, I am a 60 year old photographer in a highly digital world and social media madness. When you are of a certain age it can feel like you are being overlooked by the younger creatives, this is my humble opinion and it can be challenging at times. I wanted to know if other people over the age of 50 felt the same way in their field of work and after reading the questionnaires I sent to them I see I’m not the only one that feels this way.
Kim, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a visual storyteller for over twenty years; since I can remember I have been fascinated with painting with light with a fancy camera. One good thing about being my age I got to exprience film cameras, the ones you couldn’t look at the back of the camera to see how your image look, we had to wait at least seven days to see our images LOL! “Get in right in camera”, I didn’t have photoshop or lightroom durning the 70’s and 80’s timeframe. I received most of my training via of the military using a film camera, when I retired in 2008 I went back to school for a degree in Digital Photography. It was life changing for me, school made me realize that photography was going to be my second career. I quit my government job that I had at the time and started my photography business, I specialize in fine art portraits, food photography and family sessions.
My clients love my style of storytelling and my editing style, I have heard people say they can tell a Kim Craven image just by the style and clarity, that I am most proud of. I want my clients to be themselves when in front of my camera, I’m not much into posing, more into natural positions and placements. I also create scenes for my clients, before a session I will find out if they have a vision if not I’ll help them come up, I need to know what story are they trying to convey in their images.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
“You are too old to be starting a new career!” Really! I didn’t know there was a time limit to follow your passion! But, I did question myself when I went back to school, my mind wasn’t retaining information like it did in my younger days and I had a daughter still in high school so it wasn’t easy. I had to motivate and push myself on a daily basis but I didn’t give up! Never give up on your dreams, goals or passions, if it was easy everyone would be doing it.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The quality of my work and my personality. It is my duty to give my clients my best and if they are not satisfy with my work we will reshoot (never had to do that). My clients usually end up as a friend and that helps with getting new clients.
