We were lucky to catch up with Francisco Alba recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Francisco , thanks for joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Going all in as a barber. That has been the most important and riskiest thing I’ve done. We as humans tend to seek the conform in all we do. Going solo was the best thing I could have done as a barber. It highlights your weakness and strengths.
In 2019, I took it upon myself to go on my own and continue building my brand. After working for a commission shop for almost 5 years, I knew I could run my own business.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers?
I fell into the world of hair back in 2007/2008 during my first year at UT Austin. It started off as a good way for me to make a little money on the side. I have always been an artist and cutting hair was just another expression of that.
I am detailed oriented and I think that’s something that sets my work apart in this industry. It’s a complete package – from client retention, the haircut, client experience, professionalism, & punctuality.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Having the ability to call your own shots. If you want to take time off, you take it. If you want to work more, you work more. The list goes on – that is the beauty of being your own entity.

Have you ever had to pivot?
I was heading to college undeclared, but with the idea of transferring into the school of Architecture. After being denied, I shifted into History with a minor in Spanish, because I thought I wanted to do education after I graduated. I kept cutting hair all throughout college to the point where I knew this is what I wanted to pursue in life. I was blessed to have gotten an education at UT, and also the opportunity to have found my calling.
