We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Natalia, Aaron Hopman, Hopman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Natalia, Aaron below.
Natalia, Aaron, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
One of the biggest risks we’ve taken was starting our business, Polarity Tattoo Studio, right as the world was coming out of the pandemic.
Before this, I had spent years working in management across different industries, while my husband Aaron had built his career as a tattoo artist. We were both working constantly, often in opposite schedules, and trying to raise two young kids in the middle of it. The pandemic forced everything to slow down, and for the first time in a long time, we had space to really look at our lives. What we realized was simple, but hard to ignore: we weren’t fulfilled, and we weren’t present with each other or our family in the way we wanted to be.
As Ontario began lifting its final lockdowns, we noticed something else – vacant commercial spaces everywhere. It was a difficult time for many businesses, but to us, it also felt like a narrow window of opportunity. We had a strong feeling that the lockdowns were behind us, and we decided to trust that instinct.
We took all of our savings and then some and committed to opening our own tattoo studio. It was a leap of faith in every sense. There were no guarantees that restrictions wouldn’t return, and we didn’t even have a team lined up. It was just the two of us, building something from the ground up, hoping others would believe in our vision enough to join us.
We put ourselves out there, networked, reached out to artists, and slowly began building relationships. One by one, incredibly talented people came on board. What started as a risk taken in uncertainty turned into something far greater than we imagined.
Now, heading into our fourth year, we’ve built a strong, growing team and a studio we’re incredibly proud of. That decision to trust our instincts during an uncertain time completely changed the trajectory of our lives, our family, and our future.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We’re the owners of Polarity Tattoo Studio, a custom tattoo studio based in Hamilton, Ontario. Between the two of us, we come from very different backgrounds, which is really what shaped the foundation of our business. I (Natalia) spent years working in management across different industries, while my husband Aaron built his career as a tattoo artist specializing in black and grey portrait realism.
Aaron actually knew from a young age that this was what he wanted to do. He grew up watching Miami Ink and fell in love with the idea of tattooing as both art and storytelling. By the time he was 12, he had already decided this was his path. It’s funny, his grade 8 year book specifically mentions him as most likely to become a tattoo artist. It wasn’t easy – there were a lot of years of grinding, apprenticing, and pushing through uncertainty. When we had our newborn daughter, he was working in kitchens at night while apprenticing during the day, just to keep moving forward. That persistence is what built him into the artist he is today, and eventually into a recognized name locally for his work.
Polarity was built on that same mindset- hard work, belief, and doing things our own way.
Today, we’re a team of seven artists, all specializing in different styles of tattooing. That diversity is one of our biggest strengths. Whether someone is looking for fine line, realism, bold traditional, or something more custom and conceptual, we’re able to offer a wide range of styles under one roof without sacrificing quality or individuality.
What really sets us apart, though, is the environment we’ve created. We’ve always said we want people to feel like they’re walking into a space that’s both professional and welcoming – like visiting an old friend who also happens to give you an exceptional tattoo. We’re down to earth and we genuinely care about our clients and their experience. Getting tattooed can be a vulnerable thing, and we don’t take that lightly.
Beyond tattooing, we also offer artwork, aftercare products, and merchandise, but the core of what we do is building something bigger than just a service. We’ve been recognized as an award-winning studio, and we’re incredibly proud of that but what matters more to us is the community we’ve built around us. We regularly run fundraisers and give back because we know that without our community, we wouldn’t be here.
Internally, we operate very much as a team. Everyone brings their own strengths, and that’s what makes us whole. I handle the business side of things: operations, structure, growth while Aaron leads creatively as our senior artist, art director, and mentor to the team. That balance is actually where the name “Polarity” comes from: two different forces working together to create something whole and well rounded.
At the end of the day, we’re most proud of what we’ve built not just as a business, but as a space for artists to grow, for clients to feel comfortable, and for creativity to thrive.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
We met when we were 19 and 21 through a mutual friend who invited us both out to a bar one night. Funny enough, neither of us actually wanted to go – we both had to be convinced separately. But in one of those small, lucky moments, we both said yes.
We ended up spending the entire night talking. Not small talk either – we were deep into conversations about life, the universe, everything. Before we knew it, it was 2am. When we left, we exchanged numbers, and I saved him in my phone as “Aaron Space” because of how much we had talked about the universe and I didn’t know his last name. I still have him saved like that to this day 14 years later.
From that night on, we were pretty much inseparable. Everything just moved naturally and quickly, and about 15 months later, we welcomed our daughter.
Looking back, it’s one of those moments where if either of us had said no that night, our entire lives would look completely different. Instead, it became the start of both our family and, eventually, the business we’ve built together.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Honestly, the most effective strategy for us has been simple doing great tattoos and giving people a genuinely good experience. Word of mouth has been everything. When people trust you with something as permanent as a tattoo and leave feeling taken care of, they talk about it, and that kind of growth is real and lasting.
We’ve always taken a very grassroots, local approach boots on the ground, being present in our community, showing up to events, and building real relationships. Conventions and local events across the province have also been huge for us in meeting new clients and connecting with other artists.
Social media is also a great tool when used well (which we’re still learning how to get better at).
At the end of the day, nothing replaces consistency, quality, and how you make people feel. That’s what’s built our reputation and continues to grow our business.
