We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Valerie Richardson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Valerie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
So, I started with a simple idea—I’d been attending a lot of networking events, but I realized something was missing. There was a gap in the market for a truly community-driven platform where businesses could share resources and grow together. The next morning, I sketched out a rough concept, and over the next few weeks, I met with other entrepreneurs, building a small advisory board. We defined the mission—to democratize business growth in our community—and from there, I set up an initial framework: a website, a member engagement plan, and a calendar of workshops. Every week, I held open sessions, gathering feedback, iterating on the platform. And that sustained momentum is what took us from just an idea to a thriving network of over 200 members today

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Of course. I’d be happy to share. My name is Valerie Richardson, and I’ve been deeply rooted in community development for over a decade. My professional journey started in Detroit, where I worked in the public sector on economic empowerment initiatives. I realized that small businesses often lacked access to practical resources, mentorship, and collaboration spaces. So, I created Let’z Network as a direct response to that need. Our platform offers a hybrid model—both digital and in-person
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I had to unlearn was the idea that meeting new people was something to be cautious about or even avoided. For a long time, I associated new connections with uncertainty—questioning intentions, overthinking interactions, and staying within what felt comfortable and familiar.
The backstory really comes from my early experiences navigating both professional and personal spaces where trust wasn’t always guaranteed. I learned to keep my circle small and move carefully. While that protected me in some ways, it also limited my exposure, my opportunities, and ultimately my growth.
As I started building Let’z Network, I quickly realized that mindset wouldn’t serve the vision I had. You can’t build a community, create opportunities, or foster collaboration if you’re closed off to new relationships. So I had to intentionally shift my thinking—seeing new connections not as risks, but as possibilities.
I began putting myself in more rooms, having more conversations, and leading with openness instead of hesitation. And what I found was powerful—every new connection carried the potential for collaboration, shared knowledge, or even just inspiration.
Now, I view networking as a form of community building, not just for business growth but for collective empowerment. That shift didn’t just help me grow Let’z Network—it helped me grow as a leader. It’s also why I encourage others in my community to step outside their comfort zones, because you never know which conversation can change your trajectory

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What really helped build my reputation in my market was consistency, authenticity, and delivering real value—every single time I showed up.
In the beginning, I didn’t focus on trying to “look established.” Instead, I focused on being useful. Whether it was sharing resources, hosting workshops, or simply connecting the right people, I made sure that anyone who engaged with Let’z Network walked away with something tangible.
Another key factor was visibility with purpose. I didn’t just show up in rooms—I contributed. I asked questions, shared insights, and created opportunities for others to be seen as well. Over time, people began to associate my name and my brand with collaboration, professionalism, and results.
I also built my reputation by keeping my word. If I said I was going to host an event, make a connection, or provide a resource—I followed through. That level of reliability builds trust quickly, especially in a community-driven space.
And honestly, community impact played a huge role. As Let’z Network grew to over 200 members, people were able to see real-time proof of what we were building. It wasn’t just talk—it was active engagement, real connections, and measurable growth for the people involved.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just network for personal gain—I build ecosystems where everyone has the opportunity to grow. And that intention is what continues to strengthen my reputation
