We caught up with the brilliant and insightful K Banks a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
K, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning anything first requires wanting to be bad at it. While I was recommended books and mentorship – the homework was all mine. I knew the first couple of years would be the hardest. Yet with a healthy dose of consistency, determination, and listening to feedback, I became a sponge in order to become the stitched together Frankenstein of good habits. I knew I would rather stumble over good habits, than learn bad habits and correct them later. What really kicked it up was the studying aspect and carving time to write both alone and with others. The hardest part of staying on track – being a comedian is super fun. A lot of people get stuck in their comfort zones and forget to graduate the rooms they know just because their friends are there.

K, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is KBanks and I’m a stand up comedian based in Las Vegas, NV. I’ve day dreamed about being in comedy for so long I don’t know any other version of life. I originally tried stand up a handful of times in my 20’s, yet I was living too fast. Being told “you’re funny – you just need to clean it up a bit” make zero sense, so I chose the comfortable route. I lived life, lots had happened and lots had changed, so it wasn’t until it found me again that I decided to take it seriously. I was working as wedding planner at the time, and after about a year of being with the company, one of my minsters came into my office and asked if I had any interest in stand up, as I had natural habits of a seasoned comedian. Since then, I almost haven’t looked up. Within 3yrs I had invented 2 gameshows, produced a number of successful comedy shows, got accepted to my first festival, and now the road opener for Stoner Rob.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I knew I wanted to become a producer specifically because my background not only made the craft easy for me to learn, but also Vegas was very stuck with 1992 comedy of ‘I hate my job, I hate my car, I hate my wife’ and it was time to hear some new perspective. For a long time the scene was misfits of guys ostracized from every other place, and found comfort with travelers creating a different room every night – allowing them to not travel. Needless to say, it got lazy fast. Seeing this, I wanted to build a different path. Setting myself a part from the pack doesn’t always make me the nice guy, but I’m building the comedy shows I want to see in rooms where I’d feel comfortable sitting front row, while providing a safe green room. I don’t feel like it’s a radical statement to say that women should be safe not being around comedy, in every aspect.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The reward is knowing I get to provide a great night for my friends. It’s throwing the best party with the most funny people that will guarantee a laugh, no matter the day. While I dedicate my work to the number of other females who have quickly followed, the reward is allowing them to find a laugh.
