We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Constance Nelson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Constance , appreciate you joining us today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
Growing up with a learning disability I had to really work twice hard to level the playing field at all times to succeed. This gave me the drive and the initiative to be an entrepreneur, someone who really wants to make a difference. In order to do this, I had to push myself and find a creative way to study. I needed to accept the limitations that I had and use them for myself. This is where I learned that life is happening for me—not to me. I had to accept what life had given me, but use it to my advantage. This was also my journey to ask for help. Accepting my disabilities and getting tested, I was able to get accommodations for my college classes.
I learned that I need to accept my clients the way I have learned to accept myself.
In my business I believe in treating all my clients like VIP’s and creating raving fans. This was one of the first things I learned when creating a thriving business. I always remember that my clients are not working for me, I am working for them. I always make sure I am available to my clients, and make sure that I am accessible and they never feel like they are alone. I want them to always feel connected to something. The same way I wanted to be connected to something genuine. Growing up I was different, and therefore bullied quite a bit. So today, I always try to make my clients feel like they are a part of a community which has led to the scale of my business today.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
It is my passion and my love to turn pain into something useful. I always wanted to make sure I could return the help I was given in therapy during my 20s. I learned that I wouldn’t have the ability to do that, so during my therapy practices I tapped into these women who helped me understand that I did have the potential.
I went to college with my learning disabilities in front of me and not behind me. I found that I could ask for help, and I understood I could actually succeed with my college experience, no matter how different from others it may have been
I ended up graduating with my Bachelors Degree in Psychology and my Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health. From there, I created my business—Constantly Healthy Counseling & Coaching. I have built an amazing team that shares my mission to connect people with empathy and compassion so they can live amazing lives, and create their new path to self-fulfillment.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I’ve signed up for business seminars after business seminars, and what I learned from all the conferences I have been to,was to make my clients raving fans. I persistently make sure that the first visit is packed with information and understanding. I provide my clients with items and tools for them to succeed, and make sure that they know they are taken care of
I always want to make sure my clients feel like they have accomplished something even from the very first session. I want them to feel honored and supported during their journey. I also provide therapy sessions and coaching outside business hours because problems are not nine to five.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I pivoted when I realized I was not able to do everything in my business, and learned that great leaders hire great people. Do what you do best and outsource the rest. I found that I did not have to do everything on my own—I recognized we could service more people if we hired a team that I could move my clients to; my dream team. It was important to me to make sure my team knows that we are a part of something bigger. Constantly Healthy is not just a business, it’s a mission and a lifestyle.
In my business—Constantly Healthy Counseling & Coaching, we take care of everyone from 3 years old to 80 years old. Each team member is involved and we all collectively take care of our clients. We use a wrap around method so we provide and support our clients’ needs.
