We recently connected with Jamila Anderson and have shared our conversation below.

Jamila, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?

I was unhappy at my job and knew that I could not continue to stay in a place that blocked my creativity. I decided to take a leap of faith and take my entire life savings to start my own salon. Although this has been tough, I have trusted that God will bring the right stylist and clientele. I wanted a salon that had a community feel and is a safe place for stylists to be the creative individuals they are.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

I am a former educator and licensed cosmetologist. I completed the cosmetology program in high school. I worked in a salon while I was attending college. After graduating from Prairie View A & M University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering, I decided to return to my first love: the beauty industry. I was simultaneously an educator for 12 years. I decided to leave education and give 100% to my passion. It sounded crazy to most, but chasing my passion over profit was the most rewarding decision I have made. I also had a hair care line, Parker J’s Hair Care. I decided to hone in on one thing, and it has allowed me to meet many people and experience many things. I love the flexibility of creating my own path. That all lead me to opening up Mila Bee Studios.

Have you ever had to pivot?

As many people know, I had a successful hair care brand for over 10 years. When COVID shut the world down, it impacted my business, and we decided to close. I was not ready to give up. After going back to the drawing board, two years later, we officially opened the doors to Mila Bee Studios.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?

I believe in building genuine relationships with my clients. They have, in turn, become referrals that have helped build my reputation in the industry. My clients know I will be there and provide quality service.
