We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jennifer Schumacher a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jennifer, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
Being a business owner is an amazing experience but I think people can have a misconception and misjudge how difficult it can be. Owning your own business is just that, everything is on you. The reality of always needing to be creative, competitive, and continously transformimg to maintain and attract new clients. If you dont grow then your business will not. The pressure can be overwhelmong at times. It takes sacrific whether it be time away from your family, friends, or even yourself. Recently going through transitioning my business, renovating my building, and a student with a family, I felt like I was being pulled in so many directions. Trying to keep everything afloat. I was at the point of burnout. Questioning is this really worth it? Is this what I really want anymore? I had to take a step back and have a tough conversation with myself. Why not go back to my 9 to 5 and release myself from the strain. Then I looked back, I was unhappy in that 9 to 5. I had no creativity, no freedom to do things how I saw fit. I realized that everything has a season and that includes your business. You are going to have good times and bad. Momements of stillness and moments of growth. Owning a business is exhausting yet exhilarating. What really keeps me driven are my clients who I like to refer to as my guests. I strive to help others, to teach them to maintain balance. I like to think I practice what I recommned, but was slipping from that. I decided to go back to the basics if you will. Go back to the sessions, the modalities that first drew me to the spiritual side of energetic care. Grounding, not setting expectations, but allow things to flow. To work hard and to not sweat the small stuff. At the end of the day I love what I do, I love the freedom of my business, and love the life I’m creating for not only myself, but my family.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Energy is all around us! From a young age I knew I was different then most. I was very aware with heightened senses and always drawn to the spiritual realm. Having a medical background, I found out just how powerful the mind can be in allowing the physical body to heal. My father was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2011. He was recieving treatment in Chicago and the hospital offered energy work as part of his wellness plan. I observed how his emotional and eneregetic being impacted him physically. As my father’s journey ended I had no idea that mine was just beginning. This lead me on my own energy exploration. Ghost Hunting, Mediumship, and differentiating of types of energy. Eventually making the move to Reiki Healing, Mentorship, and guiding others to open their unique gifts.
With many years of experiences, education, and personal curiosity, I am honored to assist those around me. Everyone has a unique experince anywhere from releasing deep seeded traumas, to openning up to their own gifts, or just exploring spirituality in general. I like to encouge individuals to find their path, as I assist them on the adventure. I love what I do because of the variety. To see a guest come in at a difficult time in life and watch them overcome the hurtle. To witness the child like wonder in others as they themselves advance into Reiki practitioners. I enjoy to teach and share my knowledge and experiences. I chereish my guests, my community of fellow healers and guides. We can all use an earth angel cheering us on.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
The best source of new clients has to be hands down, referrals. Dont get me wrong, I believe in the power of social media, advertsing, networking, but word of mouth has others been my biggest asset. When a guest is with me I want them to feel like they have my undivided attention, because they do! Making those intimate conncetions can really help you grow. Its not just being fiendly, people know when you care, they can feel it. So no matter what type of business you have if you put care and passion into it, you will be noticed. Referral incentives have also worked great. Offering a discount or free gift to the first time client and the person who referred them is always a hit. People like to feel aprreicated and that is something I always strive to do.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Consistancy. No matter my work load, or personal responsibility, as a business owner I have always been consistant. Online presence, taking part in community events, and an updated website has always been a priority. When you are seen I believe it sends a message that you take great pride in your work. I have had a few businesses and business partners over the years but through it all I have been able to maintain my guests and continue to grow because of my commintment to them and the community. So be dependable, relieable, and remain seen. Stay current and educated in your field as well. Thinking outside of the box and staying competitive is a great way to build.
