We were lucky to catch up with Don Garrett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Don , appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on has been my DryBar Comedy special. It’s titled “Nice Guys Finish Worst.” It’s literally the story of my life. It’s my most meaningful project because of my upbringing. I’m from a small, country town called Southampton County, VA. My little part of the county has a population of 2,000 people or less. The chance of one of us being on tv is very slim. But, somehow I was fortunate enough to beat those odds. That’s not something I take lightly. I hope that it inspires people from my county to follow their dreams. And, furthermore, my parents can say their kid has a comedy special. That’s a flex. None of the other PTA parents can claim that.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m an internationally touring standup comedian with almost 9 years of experience. I’m Virginia born and raised, but, I’ve called Charlotte, NC home for the last decade. My comedy journey began long before I began performing. My friends in Virginia encouraged me to pursue standup comedy. I had no idea that I’d do just that upon relocating to Charlotte. I had the honor of being voted Comedian of the Year by Queen City Nerve in 2020. I was also voted Critic’s Pick Best Comedian 2025 by Queen City Nerve.
My motto is “Laughter is an instant vacation.” I pride myself on connecting with audiences and taking their minds off of their troubles for just a few minutes.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I wouldn’t call it strategy, per se. However, just being myself has worked the best. Comedians are hired to make audiences laugh. That’s tangible. I’m a person that pays attention to the intangibles. Small details matter in both my personal and professional life. The things that matter to clients are punctuality, professionalism, accountability, etc. Consistency in handling the small details have helped grow my clientele tremendously.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Human connection has been the most rewarding aspect of being a comedian. We live in a society dominated by streaming, AI, social media, and other things that stop humans from touching grass. I’m always excited and honored to meet and chat with audience members after shows. I’m always excited to meet new comedians that I’ve never worked with. Standup comedy is still connecting humans in real time. That’s a vibe that can’t be duplicated.
