We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kyle Benner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kyle, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
We were writing and playing our own music back in middle school. Of course back then it was much more care free and much worse quality. But as time went on, we began honing in on our craft and started to think that maybe we could actually do this. In 2017, we took a risk to start on a path as a duo. No real drummer, no classic band lineup. Just two twin brothers with a unique take on indie pop music. And it’s been great so far.

Kyle, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
We create our own unique brand of pop music, usually consisting of melodic guitars, rich synths, and intense harmonies. We think we’re different because we’re trying to allow people in the crowd to feel like part of our band and forget about the crazy things happening outside of the gig. We always insist everyone stay in the moment and make memories at our shows, and we utilize nostalgia and irony with our custom light show and visual aid in the form of a 90’s TV. We’re most proud of our catalog of music that people who listen have called “pop music for depressed people”. We tackle some heavy topics in our lives but shroud them in glittery soaring music and vibes.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
To support artists and creatives, society needs to treat them as serious professions. The majority of those who choose this do so purely out of passion, but many fail due to the pitfalls of being forced to choose between a day job and a dream job. Basic income, health insurance, and better splits in streaming are bare necessities to achieve a better artistic landscape.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Being able to travel from city to city selling out theaters would constitute as achieving our goal we set out years ago. But we’ll always want more. That’s our next step hopefully.
