We recently connected with Wendell Jordan and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Wendell , thanks for joining us today. The first dollar your firm earns is always special. We’d love to hear about how you got your first client that wasn’t a friend or family.
My first client was five or six years ago when I lived in St Louis, MO. I was tired of cold calling after doing it for years and swore to find a better way to get clients. I started a cold email campaign that mixed a bit of random searching with businesses I found in Meetup groups. After a few weeks of sending messages that weren’t even getting read I finally got a reply from someone asking me if I could fix their website that they started but got stuck building. I was excited, I think I responded with my price… $500! I believe they paid that over five very drawn out and uneven payments but that cemented that I was on the right path.
Wendell , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a passionate and dedicated SEO specialist and digital marketer with a decade of experience in sales and marketing. I started my career on the business development and sales side of a web design agency I was co-owner of. Over the years, I learned the basics of web design and search engine optimization. Once I started my agency, I realized there needed to be more focus on visitor conversions and not just design and user experience.
Currently, I am the owner of Jordan Marking Consultants, a digital marketing agency focused on high-converting search engine optimization strategies. We create a monthly action item list that allows our clients to hold us accountable and see where our strategies are growing their business. Our goals is to educate our clients on what SEO can do for their business and how we can increase revenue through higher search rankings.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Over the years, my approach has varied when keeping in touch with clients. In the beginning, when my book of business was small and I was an army of one, making random phone calls to clients every couple of months was the best way to keep myself top of mind and build longstanding rapport. As our services have evolved and our client list grows, we have started sending monthly reports and scheduling calls with clients monthly. For some of our current services, we require a monthly call to review data and ensure we are still on target.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
We are currently pivoting, having decided to no longer offer a full suite of digital marketing services and niche-down into an SEO agency as of this year. Since I started in this industry the name of the game was “don’t leave money on the table” so naturally that meant being as full service as possible. As I began having more interviews and networking conversations, I realized the topic was always SEO and local SEO. After some soul searching I decided it was time to pull the plug on the other services and become great at doing one thing instead of good at doing a bunch of things. Today we are onboarding new clients more frequently with a more concise plan for their success.
