We were lucky to catch up with Spenser Ward recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Spenser thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
Growing up my Dad had a remodeling business and I was at times his only employee. Weekends and summers were spent working alongside him. From roofing houses in the scorching summer heat to installing plumbing and electrical, we did it all. From age 12 to 18 I worked and learned from my Dad and he instilled a work ethic in me that is second to none. And I believe whole heartedly that is why I succeed as a business owner. In his eyes if I was sitting around, I didn’t have enough to do and he would find something for me to do. There were times I hated it but I am glad he did it. In my opinion, the best gift a parent can give to their child is work ethic. And my Dad delivered 100%.
To my son (Beau) buckle up…..it’s going to be a ride.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m the owner of Carpet Boss LLC, a Kansas City based carpet and rug cleaning company. I got into this industry because I saw a real gap between what customers expected and what they were actually getting. Too many companies rush jobs, overpromise, and underdeliver. I wanted to build something different—something built on results, trust, and consistency.
At Carpet Boss, we specialize in carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, and especially area rug care. Rugs are a big focus for us because they require a completely different level of knowledge and attention compared to standard carpet cleaning. Whether it’s synthetic, wool, or high-end silk rugs, we treat each piece based on its specific needs. We also focus heavily on odor removal something a lot of companies claim to do but don’t fully solve. We stand behind it and guarantee it.
What we really provide isn’t just cleaning it’s peace of mind. People are trusting us with their homes, their investments, and in many cases, items that have sentimental value. We solve problems like deep-set stains, pet odors, and long-term buildup that customers thought was permanent. Seeing the transformation and the reaction from customers is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.
What sets us apart is our attention to detail and our refusal to cut corners. We don’t treat this like a volume business we treat it like a craft. Every job matters, whether it’s a small room or a high-end rug. We also focus heavily on customer experience, from communication to convenience, including things like free pickup and delivery for rugs.
What I’m most proud of is the reputation we’re building. A lot of our growth has come from word of mouth, repeat customers, and people who genuinely trust us. That tells me we’re doing things the right way.
If there’s one thing I want people to know, it’s that we take pride in our work and we stand behind it. We’re not just trying to get in and out we’re trying to be the company you call every time and recommend to everyone you know.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think the biggest factor in building our reputation has been consistency and actually delivering on what we promise. In this industry, a lot of companies say the right things, but the follow-through just isn’t there. From day one, I made it a priority that if we say we can do something especially when it comes to tough issues like stains or pet odors we stand behind it 100%.
Another big piece has been attention to detail. We don’t rush jobs just to fit more into the day. Every home, every rug, every piece of furniture gets treated with care. Customers notice that, and it builds trust quickly.
Communication has also played a huge role. We keep people informed, we show up when we say we will, and we make the process easy. Things like offering pickup and delivery for rugs or being upfront about expectations go a long way in setting us apart.
Honestly, though, word of mouth has been everything. When someone has a great experience especially when we solve a problem they thought couldn’t be fixed they tell people. That kind of organic growth has been the foundation of our reputation.
At the end of the day, we’ve built our name by doing the job right, treating people fairly, and making sure every customer feels like they made the right call choosing us.

Any advice for managing a team?
For me, it starts with leading by example. You can’t expect your team to care about the work, the customers, or the standards if you don’t show that yourself every day. Whether it’s work ethic, attitude, or attention to detail, your team is always watching what you tolerate and what you reinforce.
Clear expectations are also huge. People do their best work when they know exactly what’s expected of them and what success looks like. We focus on doing things the right way every time, not just getting things done quickly. That consistency removes a lot of confusion and stress.
I also think respect and communication go a long way in maintaining morale. Everyone wants to feel valued. That means listening, being fair, and recognizing good work when you see it. It doesn’t have to be anything complicated just acknowledging when someone goes the extra mile or handles a tough job well can make a big difference.
Another big factor is making sure your team has the tools and support they need to succeed. It’s hard to stay motivated if you feel set up to fail. We invest in proper training and equipment so our guys can take pride in the results they deliver.
At the end of the day, morale comes down to culture. If people feel like they’re part of something solid, where their work matters and they’re respected, they’re going to show up with a better attitude and take more ownership in what they do.
