We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Becky Lee. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Becky below.
Hi Becky , thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
For most of my professional career, the idea of business ownership felt intimidating; something I never allowed myself to fully sit with. I moved on auto pilot, confident in my ability to do my job well. Comfortable in the rhythm of rinse and repeat.
Stepping into ownership has shifted everything, I can say with certainty that I love this work and only wish I had embraced it sooner. There’s a learning curve, of course, and a constant need to grow and adapt, but it is deeply rewarding in ways I had never anticipated.
Alongside this journey, I still hold a “regular job” and I value it just as much. It offers a rare opportunity to experience leadership from another perspective. To observe, learn, and stay grounded in the process.
At the heart of it all, my business is my love project. It’s where most of my energy, creativity, and intention go. And truthfully, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Becky , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am the founder of Luminous Dance Productions, a Columbia-based studio rooted in faith, led with love, and grounded in the belief that true joy begins within. With over two decades as a dance educator and creative, I felt called to build something our community was missing. A space where dancers are both challenged in their craft and deeply nurtured as people.
At Luminous, we believe excellence and balance can coexist. Our dancers are encouraged to grow strong and successful without sacrificing their childhood. There is space here for family dinners, for friendships beyond the studio, and for exploring other passions. We honor the whole dancer; understanding that a well rounded life not only supports longevity in the arts, but strengthens it.
Our structure reflects that philosophy. We offer longer, more intentional classes fewer days each week, creating room for life outside the studio while maintaining a high standard of training. The result is a culture that feels different. One where dancers arrive eager, stay engaged, and leave fulfilled.
What truly sets Luminous apart is the spirit within our walls. We lead with positivity, encouragement, and a shared sense of purpose. Every dancer is supported, seen, and celebrated. Not just by their instructors, but by one another. It’s a space where light is cultivated, confidence is built, and joy is felt.
Our faculty is both highly qualified and deeply invested, creating an environment where technique is refined, creativity is explored, and each dancer is given the time and attention to grow with intention.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Partnerships have proven to be our most impactful source of new clients. We collaborate with dance programs at local schools, offering their students exclusive discounts and class pass opportunities. These relationships do more than grow our reach. They strengthen the dance community, nurture the next generation, and help prepare young artists for future paths in the arts.
While social media has played an important role in building brand awareness, it is these intentional partnerships that truly cultivate meaningful connections and bring new dancers through our doors.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
The most meaningful advice I can offer on leading a team is this: pour into your staff with the same intention you hope they pour into your clients. With love, joy and light. When your team feels genuinely heard, supported, and valued, that energy naturally extends into every interaction they have.
It’s often the simplest gestures that leave the deepest impact. Shared meals, thoughtful tokens of appreciation, and handwritten notes that remind them they are seen. A culture built on care doesn’t just support your staff. It elevates everything your business stands for.
