Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melissa Ketchum. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Melissa , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I officially started my fashion brand, Meli Made Artistry, LLC, in 2014. It was the first business I had ever launched, and at the time, I was still searching for my North Star—both in life and as a designer.
From the beginning, I knew sustainability was important to me. I started by upcycling vintage jewelry, clothing, and accessories, and opened an Etsy shop to share my work. I also began doing basic alterations, slowly building my skills and confidence.
Around that same time, I became deeply interested in personal development and experienced what I can only describe as a spiritual awakening. While I loved fashion and creativity, I felt torn—as though my creative pursuits and my spiritual growth were competing for my attention. At the time, I believed I had to choose one or the other. I chose to dive fully into spirituality and self-improvement, becoming a certified life coach, interfaith minister, and sound and energy healer.
That work gradually took the forefront of my life, and I set my design work aside for a while. However, looking back, I can see that my desire to create never truly left. It would resurface in different ways—people would approach me for design projects, and opportunities continued to find me.
One of the most notable experiences came through a yearly fashion show fundraiser in my city called Raw Fusion, hosted by the local builders association. The concept is to create wearable art from building materials. I was hired by the company I worked for at the time to design pieces for the show for two consecutive years—both designs won awards. Later, I was commissioned by a law firm to create another design, which went on to win the “People’s Choice Award.”
Over the years, I’ve taken on a variety of creative projects—from designing pieces inspired by boutique hotels to creating custom looks for formal events, and even crafting an upcycled wedding gown. While I truly enjoyed these opportunities, my primary focus during that season remained on personal and professional growth.
Throughout my journey in coaching and spiritual development, I grew tremendously. I worked through limiting beliefs and internal blocks around my creativity, and in doing so, gained a deeper understanding of myself. That growth has brought me to where I am today—a place where I feel aligned, grounded, and fully prepared to pursue my creative path.
If I’m honest, there was a time when I wondered if I should have given my business my full attention sooner. But now, I see that every phase of my journey served a purpose. The experiences, lessons, and inner work were all necessary in shaping not only my business, but who I am as a creator.
Today, I don’t regret the timing. I’m stepping forward with clarity and intention, ready to give this chapter my full energy. I also believe it’s important to recognize that it’s never too late to begin—or to begin again. Success doesn’t have to follow a conventional timeline, and it doesn’t need to be defined by anyone else. For me, success is finally doing what I’ve always felt called to do.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The seed of becoming a fashion designer was planted in my heart when I was in the fourth grade. We had a school job fair where each student created a presentation around a chosen profession. At the time, I thought I wanted to be a doctor. But as I walked around the room, something shifted. One classmate had chosen fashion design—and while I don’t remember any of the other presentations, I remember hers. Something about it stayed with me. It felt like recognition. In that moment, something clicked, and I knew that was the path I wanted to follow.
That early spark eventually led me to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Fashion Design, where I began to develop the technical skills to support what I had always felt intuitively. But what truly defines my work today is not just my formal training—it’s the integration of my creative practice with my background in spirituality, energy work, and manifestation.
My design process is deeply collaborative and experiential. I guide my clients through visualization and manifestation practices to help them connect with their inner world—their energy, their essence, and their truth. Through my experience working with energy, I’m able to intuitively understand their vision, often beyond what they can fully articulate, and translate that into a tangible, wearable form.
What I create is more than clothing. It is wearable art. It is an embodiment of identity, intention, and transformation.
At this stage in my business, I am expanding into the development of small, thoughtfully produced capsule collections that align with the original vision of Meli Made Artistry: sustainably crafted garments designed with both physical and energetic well-being in mind. I work with non-toxic materials and consciously sourced textiles, prioritizing fabrics that support the body rather than disrupt it—pieces that feel as good as they look.
The problem I solve for my clients is not just aesthetic—it’s energetic and emotional. Many people have a vision of how they want to feel, but struggle to express that outwardly. My work bridges that gap. I bring their inner vision to life with precision, intention, and care. The result is clothing that helps them feel alive, confident, vibrant, and aligned with their truest self.
Each piece is designed to be both expressive and enduring—bespoke garments and heirloom-quality designs that hold meaning and can be cherished for years to come.
At its core, my mission is to clothe women in safety, sovereignty, and soul—so they can fully rise into who they are. I am committed to restoring fashion as a source of healing, embodiment, and feminine liberation.
As I’ve grown, so has my vision. Meli Made Artistry exists to redefine fashion as a tool for transformation. We create non-toxic, sustainably made garments that support nervous system regulation, elevate energetic well-being, and empower women to show up fully—without dimming their light or compromising their health.
This brand is for liberated women—those who choose depth over depletion, soul over sacrifice, and beauty rooted in integrity.
Every piece is intentionally designed as a slow-fashion heirloom, crafted without synthetic fabrics, toxic dyes, or exploitative practices. What touches the body should support vitality, safety, and self-remembrance.
Because clothing can be more than functional—it can be ceremonial. It can be artful. It can be transformational.
And when women feel safe and radiant in their bodies, they rise into their power—and in doing so, they change the world.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve had to unlearn is the belief that my voice—and my vision—needed to be filtered through other people’s expectations.
Starting a business has been one of the most profound forms of personal development I’ve experienced. It brings everything to the surface—fear, self-doubt, scarcity mindset, and the fear of being fully seen. There’s no hiding from it. For me, those internal blocks showed up most strongly around my creativity and my willingness to fully claim this path.
For a long time, I questioned whether this dream was truly mine. I realized that many of the doubts I carried weren’t actually my own—they were inherited beliefs, outside opinions, and internalized limitations that had quietly shaped how I saw myself and what I believed was possible.
Unlearning that has been a slow and intentional process. It’s taken deep self-reflection, trial and error, rebuilding confidence, and most importantly, learning to trust my intuition.
What I’ve come to understand is that this work—creating, designing, and helping others express themselves—is not just something I do, it’s something I’m meant to do. It brings me joy, and it allows others to experience themselves more fully through what they wear.
Letting go of who I thought I needed to be, and choosing instead to trust who I am, has been one of the most important shifts in both my life and my business.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Resilience, for me, has been built quietly—through moments where giving up felt easier than continuing, but I chose to keep going anyway.
One of the most defining challenges I faced early on was learning how to sew. I didn’t begin until I was 20 years old, which, in the world of fashion, can feel like a late start. I often felt behind, and there were many moments where that doubt crept in—where I questioned if I had started too late or if I would ever truly catch up.
I remember working on projects that pushed me to my limits. Long nights with little sleep, making mistakes, starting over, and facing the frustration of not yet having the skill level I envisioned for myself. There were times I felt completely defeated, unsure if I could handle another setback. But I kept going.
Not because it was easy, but because something deeper wouldn’t let me walk away. I’ve come to believe that when a dream is placed in your heart, it’s there for a reason. That belief carried me through the moments when my confidence couldn’t.
Over time, I also learned the importance of seeking support—working with mentors, learning from teachers, and allowing myself to be a student at every stage. That shift changed everything. Instead of seeing gaps in my knowledge as failure, I began to see them as part of the process.
Resilience, for me, isn’t about never struggling—it’s about continuing despite it. It’s about trusting that growth is happening, even when it feels slow, and choosing to stay committed to the vision, no matter how many times you have to begin again.
