Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Edwin Hernandez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Edwin, appreciate you joining us today. If you’re open to it, can you talk to us about the best (or worst) investment you’ve made. What’s the backstory and the relevant context behind why you made the investment
I ran a technology incubator and invested in many ventures, one of those ventures is now a multi-billion dollar corporation called Pointskash. We developed a strong bonding as they spend several years at the EGLAVATOR, my incubator from about 2018 to 2023. Now they have many investments and deals on the works. Lessons learned are: consistency, keeping up with work, is as important as talent and skills, if not more.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I earned a PhD in Computer Engineering and spent time at Motorola and Microsoft, but in 2010 a patent dispute ended my employment at Motorola and began working at EGLA CORP that became my core business, Beside EGL, I am a co-founder of Mobility Workx.
I learned the business of patents, intellectual property and startups after my departure from Motorola, and how patents are valuable for tech business.
For more than 16 years, I was able to then learn how to license technologies and was always involved with startups, as I was one of the founders of “The Entrepreneurs Club” in Gainesville as a student, that place turned into a nice TECH ecosystem in Gainesville. My patents are now recognized as modern handoff and in use by millions of devices that turned into licenses with Verizon, Apple, Google, Samsung, Nokia, Ericsson, Microsoft, and many others. I have been involved as a technical expert in multi-million dollar awards and licensing deals, involving my clients such as Blue Radios, Mojo Mobility, and Intellectual Ventures.
I also invented new technologies in 2010 in the streaming world, IOT, and now with a new operating system, which are now being developed into new startups and have been used for multi-million dollar transactions and are becoming somewhat a phase 2 of what the handoff invention did.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I want to share how I lost my job at Motorola after a patent dispute became noticeable, I went into debt by putting over $70K into credit cards that were closed or reduced, after maxout in 2010. I was able to generate revenues from a new venture, payoff all credit cards and start a new business in the streaming world, all as part of a technology incubator, ran by the Enterprise Development Corporation (EDC).
The EDC went bankrupt and several startups including mine were about to be evicted, I took over the lease, and then one of my business partners shut down all income, and had to max out credit cards, Lines of Credits, and Payday Loans which turned again being in RED while I was ramping up the technology consultant arm, and had to invest in some ventures that did not fructify as expected.
As all these is taking place, I am fighting for my Mobility Workx patent portfolio against Verizon and T-Mobile which turned into a major money pit, but I had no choice but to start selling services in consulting and although I invested into startup ventures such as Stadson from my incubator, and many non-paying customers.
Regardless, I was able to settle with Verizon and survived then, in 2024 I was forced to file a patent and trade secret lawsuit against a business partner, MOOD MEDIA, and the company that acquired MOOD assets, Stingray Despite all the attacks, lawyers withdrawal, and all caveats including unfounded threats for Sanctions from Stingray attorneys, I was able to secure attorneys and fund a major litigation. I am against over 20+ lawyers.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
He was my professor at the University of Florida, my PhD advisor.
