We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tuyen Chau a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Tuyen, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Broken rice are grains of rice that get fractured during the milling process or transportation so it ends up getting packed into a separate bag to be sold as broken rice. It is often consumed by the poorer community because of its cheaper price due its “lesser” quality. This signifies not allowing circumstance to determine the journey, as a specialty dish was formed and popularized within the Vietnamese culture today. I resonated with this feeling because of her upbringing in a low income community which inspired me to be creative when having to find solutions to my problems.
Broken rice is also translated to cơm tấm, an underrated dish overseas but one of my top 5 Vietnamese comfort foods. It is a rice dish made with the fractured grains of rice, served with grilled pork chop, sausage, egg, steamed egg meatloaf, fresh vegetables, and drizzled with a fish sauce and garlic chili pepper vinaigrette.
A part of my mission is to always honor my Vietnamese culture even though I am Việt Kiều (overseas Vietnamese). I was born and raised in Georgia but have always held onto my heritage to ensure a connection with family and pass down the language and cuisine to the future generation.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I have been interested in forms of self-expression at a young age. Writing, music, photography, and so on. Though I did not know how to articulate it then, I knew that organization and setting up processes was at the foundation in anything I did.
During college I spent the money I earned working part-time jobs on a DSLR starter kit and that was when I began practicing and offering free photo sessions. One thing built on another and I started learning web and graphic design. Instead of going in a linear direction and focusing on only the technical aspects of what I did, I started looking at it a different angle in terms of how can I take what I learned and apply it to a business model.
After working franchise brokerage agency for a couple of years where I implemented processes and branched out the marketing department into a sister company, I realized that many small businesses run into staggering prices and unaffordable options in media, design, and standard marketing initiatives. This experience made me realize that I enjoy building structures, teams, and plans for businesses with creativity at the root. With an abundance of information regarding digital services comes with a lack of transparency on what would support a small business.

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
The goal is to be authentic in your actions and have your clients’ best interest as the primary intention. The tricky part here is finding a balance in taking care of your business as well. There are plenty of “How To” guides that will include email campaigns, post-service communications, social media content, and more. I follow up with my clients post-service to ensure that the services they received are still of use to them and also support their business whenever I am able to.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Broken Rice Media is still in its developing stages so word of mouth is a significant factor. Connecting with my local community and having an accurate and transparent online presence also contributed to our growth.
