We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Randy Nunoo . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Randy below.
Randy , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
My Older sister and I came to the United States from Ghana in 1985 ; and returned back to Ghana for the first time in 2019. When we arrived in Ghana our dad threw a small family gathering , there was family that we hadn’t seen in over 35 years. While just sitting around speaking to one of my cousins (who is like an older brother) that I’ve kept in contact throughout the years, I mentioned about designing a few outfits and we joked about me making that into a business. Never thought anything about it until a year later when I turned to my Girlfriend and told her I would like to start a clothing brand. Truly with her support we started.
I recognized in recent past more and more people were interested in African culture and clothing, I didn’t see anyone with authentic handmade clothing from Ghana west Africa.
The process and ideas came to me in pieces day by day and the more I thought about it ,the more I realized I could bring true Ghanaian fashion direct from Ghana 🇬🇭. which I didn’t see to many people having that unique element of authenticity. So the concept of providing modern day fashion with traditional Ghanaian fabrics was born. It took me Sometime to recognize within myself that fashion has always been around me and its truly my passion. (I would be able to go through racks of clothing and be able to spot out the most sleekest clothing within a few minutes. I considered that’s talent truth be told)

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Myself first and foremost ,a lot of my inspiration also comes from my family ; not always in the sense of fashion but for confidence. The confidence to know that we’re in this thing called life together, so hold my hands and let’s go. That within its self brings me joy daily.
When is comes to fashion most definitely my parents were huge factors. They are why I love the fashion industry and I credit them for letting me use my imagination growing up to create and mold me in the fashion world.
One of the things we try to do at Niiashfashion (knee-ash-fashion) is to keep it simple but exclusive. Pick out the best fabrics then create. We believe the biggest thing that sets us apart from others is we’re an authentic handmade clothing and accessories Brand all made in Ghana West Africa. At any point you’re looking for something to wear or Accessorize in that no one on the entire Western Hemisphere will have but you and possibly three others, we think that’s a super cool Brand to have.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Starting on this journey I took a trip to Ghana to learn about the differences in Quality and textures of certain fabrics. Then I sat down with my head tailor who just so happens to be my first cousin Alfred Lamptey and started designing clothing. Choosing which fabrics and where the placement of the fabrics designs Should be, different lengths in the clothing etc. Developing mens and womens clothing. started designing ladies handbags and wallets, unisex hats etc. During the year I would repeat this process by taking trips back to Ghana to manufacture new inventory. Seasonally..
One thing I’ve learned on this journey is you must be hands on throughout the entire process from concept to development then shipping etc.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
Funding the business initially is definitely a task and still is lol. Depleting all savings, requesting small loans from the bank and the major factor was borrowing money from my siblings and my significant other. It’s truly been a blessing the amount of support I’ve received from family.
