Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Adrian Carey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Adrian, thanks for joining us today. What was it like going from idea to execution? Can you share some of the backstory and some of the major steps or milestones?
I have been doing my own skincare routine for some time now, even as a teenager. I just didn’t put action into the plan, until I became an adult. I am a researcher at heart. I love to figure things out. As a young child, I never saw my grandmothers use anything on their skin that had a label, basically, that wasn’t homemade. For example, pure coconut oil is used for skin when dry, or pure cocoa butter has the same benefit. To me, their faces were always so pretty and healthy looking. I then realized by taking it back to the basics can naturally bring out our real true beauty. I started thinking, that in the early centuries, they didn’t have chemical-based products so, how was their skin still glowy, healthy free of acne back then? So, I started researching skin care in the 1800s and up, and I realized most of those items came from their garden or from the land. For example, rosemary comes from the Mediterranean plant used as a toner and Milk comes from cows that are used for milk soothing baths and irritated skin, what do they have in common? It’s all from natural resources from their land. So, to me, it’s simple, use what is provided to us without harmful chemical bases and obtain the same results! I also work in the medical field and see firsthand how some of these stickler high-end skincare products over time harm the skin. I wanted to take it back to the basics, and after trying the majority of these remedies over the years with success, A splash of Paint by Adrian Skincare emerged.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
I actually started doing makeup first, to get familiar with different skin types, all the while in the back of my head, I was doing research for my product line. Because, I do believe I have an artist trait, I mastered this skill as well. I would do consults with my clients and start building them a profile to understand their skin individually. I do not wear makeup while doing clients’ makeup because it’s a physical job. A lot of my clients would ask me how my skin is so flawless, which would continue to confirm that my homemade remedies were working. I will then advise them of little tricks and recipes for their skin, they always came back with positive remarks on the products I suggested. I knew after then, that it was time to put action into the plan. I then did all the legalities and became an official skincare provider now having my LLC.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Misconceptions of having an online business, are that it only consists of posting your products and that’s it. And honestly, I kind of thought the same thing when I first launched. Man trial and error taught me that was so untrue. I had no idea how time-consuming this would be. The frequentness of advertising, the funding for advertising as well as messages replies, and questions from consumers. I even have to, from time to time, answer skincare questions in different languages, thanks to Google Translator I found a way to communicate and fix the language barrier we had. I get messages and questions from potential consumers in different time zones as well. Social Media, is my bread and butter, without it my business wouldn’t have the revenue it has. Staying on top of trending sounds is another way to stay relevant. My advice to anyone who want to have an online store and uses social media as your consumer clients is never cut your volume on your phone off, I missed so many opportunities for a sale this way, lesson learned,

Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
I realized word of mouth would not get my business to its full capacity. I had to do more. Before I opened my Ecommerce website, I was physically dropping off products and saving their information on an Excel sheet for tax purposes. I know, I went ancient when I first started 2 years ago. But, I then realized online selling is the key to a large audience and my business would no longer be my hometown based, it had the potential to be open worldwide. Pros to Eccomerece selling were it opens the floodgates for my business and I can now manage everything from shipping to questions to backorder right from the comfort of my own home. Revenue doubled from using this site and shipping was a breeze. I can even set up pick-up deliveries for free from my front door. It also gave my business a professional trustworthy look, which made my customers comfortable when purchasing. The only main con which doesn’t happen that often, was when the website went down, which means no orders for that day. I still have a little anxiety that would happen again, but that was only a one-time thing, My short-term goal is to start selling my products with Amazon and Etsy, and so on, but I haven’t crossed those lines just yet, but it’s coming. Once I land those sites, I would then achieve my overall goal.
