Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Denise McBride. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Denise, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What were some of the most unexpected problems you’ve faced in your business and how did you resolve those issues?
During the pandemic shutdown, my business faced an unexpected challenge: clients who once sought custom luxury clothing were now living in sweatpants at home. Practically overnight, demand for what I offered evaporated. As a single mom with three kids, it was a frightening time. I pivoted by reopening my tailor shop, but the clientele didn’t fully return. I had to rethink client acquisition entirely. I partnered with other stylists to open a small showroom in Minneapolis, but when that didn’t last, I created my own studio in Prior Lake. It required me to become more educational & to teaching people the impact of dressing well. Each pivot was a reminder: first impressions matter, and I had to embody that resilience myself.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My relationship with the needle began at just seven years old. What started as a childhood fascination evolved into a lifelong vocation, formalizing through rigorous training in the Apparel Arts. I spent two decades leading the tailoring department at Dayton’s. After decades of mastering the architecture of clothing, I opened my own shop in Prior Lake. Today, I combine that deep-rooted technical heritage with modern convenience as an independent stylist for J.Hilburn, Midnight Oil, and Neem.
The Problem I Solve: The Death of the “Off-the-Rack” Compromise
We live in an era of mass-produced, disposable fashion where “fit” is often an afterthought. My clients are individuals who have outgrown the frustration of the mall—the vanity sizing, the subpar fabrics, and the inevitable “close enough” fit.
I solve the problem of the ill-fitting wardrobe. I eliminate the need for my clients to ever step foot in a department store again. Instead, I provide a curated, seamless experience where every garment—from sharp business attire to bespoke denim—is engineered specifically for their unique proportions.
What Sets Me Apart: Craftsmanship Over Salesmanship
The primary distinction between myself and a traditional personal shopper is my foundation. I am not a salesperson; I am a master tailor. * Technical Authority: I don’t just look at how a garment sits; I understand the internal construction, the drape of the textile, and the structural adjustments required for a perfect silhouette.
Curated Partnerships: By representing J.Hilburn (custom menswear), Midnight Oil (women’s professional attire), and Neem (bespoke denim), I offer a 360-degree lifestyle solution.
Sustainability through Quality: I believe in “buying better, buying less.” A perfectly tailored garment is a sustainable one because it lasts a decade rather than a season.
My Pride and My Promise
I am most proud of the confidence I instill in my clients. There is a visible physical shift when someone puts on a garment made specifically for them—their posture changes, and their presence intensifies.
What I want you to know about my brand is that this is a partnership built on trust and heritage. When you work with me, you aren’t just buying clothes; you are investing in 44 years of expertise, effortless style, and the luxury of never having to settle for “off-the-rack” again.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
On the DISC scale, I’m a C and an S—so I’m naturally introverted, and public speaking is far from comfortable. Yet, I had to pivot. Instead of staying behind my sewing machine, I now stand in front of groups to teach why first impressions matter. It’s been a fundamental shift, but it’s allowed me to grow.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Yes, my side hustle absolutely became my full-time career. As a single mom with a home-based tailor shop, I was struggling financially when I first encountered J.Hilburn at a small holiday pop-up. That night, I researched them, and the idea of selling custom luxury clothing—while still being home with my kids—brought me to tears. Fourteen years later, that opportunity evolved into a thriving business. Now I represent premium brands—J.Hilburn, Midnight Oil, and Neem. What began as a small tailoring hustle changed my life, and now I love helping clients look their absolute best. And not settle for ill fitted fast fashion. I help teach my clients that they can attract anything they want, when they dress for it.
