We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Shelby St.clair. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Shelby below.
Shelby , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
It was early in 2018; I was just a few months into business as a coach using social media to build an audience and claim my expertise. I didn’t know how to use Instagram in this way yet, but I did know Facebook Groups since that’s how I had built my previous business to 6-figures. I thought “if it worked for that it can surely work for this too” but there was one key difference…with my coaching work I needed to gain the trust first so everyday I’d go into the groups and search for questions women had put in there in regards to starting or growing a business, I’d give them free advice and offer that my DM’s were open if they had more questions. From there they’d message me, we’d chat a little and then I’d invite them to a discovery call. On this call I reflected back to them all of their current struggles and I positioned working with me as the solution. I closed 70% of my clients that way and landed my first ever private client through trust building and relatability.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Shelby St.clair, a 6-figure business coach and energetic strategist for women who refuse to burn themselves out to be successful.
I help SHE-EO’s build simple, scalable business systems that actually support their lives – part-time schedules, regulated nervous systems, and consistent income – without hustle, chaos, or pretending they’re not human. I’m a mama, a leader, and proudly a little unhinged in a world that still glorifies overworking.
My work is rooted in The Ascension Method – a framework that bridges deep inner work with simple, practical strategy so the outer results are real, sustainable, and repeatable. Because mindset without systems is delusion and systems without embodiment don’t stick.
I teach women how to make money without losing themselves, simplify their businesses, and lead from certainty instead of stress.
F*ck the hustle.
Business gets to be easy.
Success is your birthright.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
The one thing I knew when going into coaching was that I wanted to create a safe space for women to fully become their truest selves but with that meant I too needed to allow all of myself to be seen and shared in a way that allowed that trust to be felt. Over the years I’ve really let my audience in to see the true journey of entrepreneurship. The highs, the lows, and everything in between. From becoming a mama & widow simultaneously, my business crashing, to the rebuilding, and full-blown identity crisis. It’s easy to look online and see successful women living extravagant lives and think “how did they do that?” “That could never be me” I wanted to create a space where the thought shifted to “if she can, so can I” and that exactly what authenticity has given me and why I have the reputation I do. I am the same woman I am online as I am offline and in person.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Before becoming the coach for women entrepreneurs that I am today, I had built 3 businesses off of pure grit and hustle so when I stepped into coaching I still held that mentality of “the more I work the more I’ll earn” but there came a day where I looked at my 60 hour work week and asked if the income i was making was really dependent on me losing sleep and missing out on family time or if I could change the narrative and take control of my time. Everything in me lit up at the idea of working less and making more but with that came shifts that had to happen on a mental and cellular level because my mind & body were primed to keep busy. Busy meant “success” as the rewiring began the identity crisis unfolded. Who am I if I’m not working all the time? Will people even trust me or believe that I can help them? What if this turns people off of my work? The voices in my head were loud but the life of freedom I wanted was even louder. I created my simple business system, developed my methodology, and went all in allowing me to now work 12 hours a week and make multi-6-figures truly embodying the work less and make more mentality.
