We were lucky to catch up with Kaitlyn Kissel recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kaitlyn , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Folks often look at a successful business and imagine it was an overnight success, but from what we’ve seen this is often far from the truth. We’d love to hear your scaling up story – walk us through how you grew over time – what were some of the big things you had to do to grow and what was that scaling up journey like?
We planned a 10 month run on our first bed and breakfast, The Doc’s Inn, to research clientele and find out if we had a viable business model/enough demand for our product.
When our little inn grew almost 10 fold, I started to pay attention to this as a primary job/potential long term business.
We reinvested our first year of profits on improvements to our first inn, the Doc’s inn, then spent two years saving profits to purchase the property next door, now The Dandelion Inn, to expand to 8 rooms.
While doing this, we built a team that could not only manage and run the short term accommodation component of what we do, but also handle private dinners, classes, and events. The concept being to cultivate multiple revenue streams to support the overall business, and also allow us to provide a more detailed product to customers.
We now run both inns, and are looking forward to introducing The Dandelion on all platforms by May this year-

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
We are a small, family-run bed and breakfast with a passion for historic preservation of local homes. We live in a small town that often sees historic homes fall into disrepair, converting them to a short accommodation’s model allows for these homes to maintain much of their historic charm and beauty.
We provide a boutique-ish hotel experience thay is focused on placing our guests comfort first. We are unique/known for our fabulous breakfasts, and our passion for community. We offer accommodations as well as classes, dinners, performances and event lectures.
I got into the business after joining our family run property company, Tedanka Properties.
Our brand is product and community focused.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Word of mouth, no question- we have hardly advertised in the last 5 years!

We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
By staying focused on delivering a great stay every single time ww are booked.
