We were lucky to catch up with Sherrie Bennett recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sherrie, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later?
I was in my 40’s when I first started taking pictures of as a hobby because I was working in healthcare as a CNA. I wish I found the passion sooner because so many stuff, I missed out on taking pictures of like my older grandchildren growing up. Not sure if doing it sooner would make me what I am today. Because the people I ran into helped me learn by doing it. The community I found in my 40s shaped my specific style. Without those specific mentors and friends, I wouldn’t be the artist am today.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
You can view my work via Instagram at Sherrie Imaging, I also have a Facebook page which is same name. I have been published in several magazines and what I am proud of most was a featured on a banner downtown Atlanta, Georgia. I shoot all sizes and sex of people no matter their look. I love to work with creative people that love dressing up in their fancy clothing, or costumes they have created. My time as a CNA made me an expert at making people feel comfortable and relaxed in front of the lens—which is 90% of the battle in portraiture!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish knew more about shooting before starting. There is so much to still learn but I go out often to take pictures of a lot of stuff. I do not limit my shooting to one thing. I love buildings, old churches, old ruins, landscapes, flowers, wildlife and yes people. Most tell you to take classes, but I have been told by many photographers it is a waste of money, to just get out and shoot.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I first worked with friends and family. Then I start networking with photography groups and worked with several models and even designers. I cannot tell someone what to do or not to do to start their business because each person is different. I person work hands on and some people cannot learn that way. But I am the type of person that can show you what I know.
