We were lucky to catch up with Misty Skolnick recently and have shared our conversation below.
Misty, appreciate you joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Nearly 40 years ago, my dad, Jerry Skolnick, was introduced to a style of pretzel that immediately stood out to him. It was different from the pretzels you’d normally find in grocery stores – harder, crunchier, and baked with simple ingredients in a way that gave it a deep, satisfying flavor. The moment he tried it, he felt like he had discovered something special.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, a city with a deep pretzel culture, Jerry knew the city well. Yet despite that strong tradition, he realized there was nothing quite like this pretzel available on store shelves. The pretzel had the kind of authentic, old-world character people appreciated, but it simply wasn’t being offered to consumers in a packaged form.
Jerry had a strong instinct for recognizing quality products and understanding what people in his community loved to eat. He saw a clear gap in the market: people were increasingly looking for simple, natural foods, but most snack options were becoming more processed and filled with additives. This pretzel was the opposite, it was straightforward, honest, and incredibly good.
What excited him most was that the product itself didn’t need a complicated story or marketing gimmick. It spoke for itself. Jerry believed that if he could get this pretzel onto store shelves and into people’s hands, it would win them over immediately. That belief was the spark that ultimately led to the creation of Uncle Jerry’s Pretzels.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Interestingly, Jerry didn’t come from a traditional food industry background. What he did have was a strong entrepreneurial instinct and a deep familiarity with the people and culture of the city where he grew up. He understood what Philadelphians appreciated: authentic foods, simple ingredients, and products that felt handcrafted rather than mass-produced.
When he launched Uncle Jerry’s Pretzels, the goal was never to compete with large snack companies on volume or flashy marketing. Instead, the focus was always on producing a premium product and staying true to its original recipe and baking process.
Our pretzels are intentionally simple. They’re made without oils, added sugars, or preservatives, and the ingredient list is short and recognizable – the way traditional foods used to be made. That simplicity is part of what allows people to indulge in a snack that feels both satisfying and wholesome at the same time.
What sets Uncle Jerry’s apart is our commitment to authenticity and consistency. Over the years, we’ve resisted the pressure to cut corners or dramatically change the product in order to scale faster. We’ve stayed focused on delivering the same pretzel that first inspired Jerry decades ago.

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
Our pretzels are produced in partnership with the Mennonite community in Lancaster, Pennsylvania – a region known for its long tradition of baking pretzels. From the beginning, working with this community felt like a natural fit because their values align closely with ours: attention to detail, pride in the craft, and a commitment to quality.
We didn’t initially have large-scale manufacturing experience, so developing the right partnerships was an important part of building the business. Over time, we found that working closely with people who understood traditional baking methods allowed us to maintain the authenticity of the product while also ensuring consistent quality.
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned over the years is the importance of strong, stable partnerships. Manufacturing a food product isn’t just about equipment and processes – it’s about relationships and trust. Markets change, demand fluctuates, and challenges inevitably arise. Having partners who share your long-term vision helps you navigate those ups and downs.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Ultimately, everything begins with the product itself. If you have an exceptional product, it creates the foundation for everything else. In our case, the pretzel’s unique taste and texture and fresh crunch have always been our strongest asset. When people try it, they immediately recognize that it’s different from mass produced pretzels.
But a good product alone isn’t enough. Building a reputation also comes down to reliability and trust. Over the years we’ve made it a priority to deliver on our commitments, whether that’s maintaining product quality, honoring relationships with partners, or providing dependable customer service.
Consistency has been especially important. Customers come back to Uncle Jerry’s because they know exactly what they’re going to get every time they open a bag.
That combination – a premium product, strong partnerships, and a commitment to doing business the right way – is what has allowed us to build a reputation that has lasted for decades.
