Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Abdullah Rasheed Muhammad. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Abdullah Rasheed, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I have been writing independently for about 16 years or so. My first manuscript was based on a slightly different subject matter from the current book based on my personal life. A memoir that I decided to write about. Along the way it became a broader project. It became a 3-part memoir with a soundtrack associated with it. A Socially Conscious Hip Hop Album & Jazz Album(Both separately created) but jointly complimenting the books. And later I decided to write a screenplay for a urban drama based on real life experiences.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
For most of my life initially in my childhood I was heavily influenced by music and art on some level. Largely influenced by family members. My Mother & Uncles. In my teenage years I began writing rhymes. And later formed a Hip Hop group with some guys in my old community. A community we call ” The Low End ” in the Bronzeville are in Chicago. That’s where it began it’s cultivation. And eventually morphed into what it’s become today. Artistic expression about real life social issues that plague my community and other communities.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes funding for my projects lol. As I am now learning a great deal about.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I overcame trauma and social paralysis through my respect for knowledge and information. I learned and appreciated the essential implementation of useful knowledge and information.
