We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dr. Karen Hills Pruden a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Karen Hills, appreciate you joining us today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first client came as a direct result of a strategic shift in how I positioned myself in the marketplace. Early on, my speaking expertise was closely tied to my leadership role within a specific organization. While I was delivering value, my reputation was anchored to my employer rather than to my individual brand.
Recognizing the importance of ownership and visibility, I invested in a business coach for my speaking business. One of the most transformative pieces of guidance I received was to intentionally separate my expertise from any single organization and establish myself as a standalone brand.
I began by showing up consistently hosting weekly Facebook Live sessions where I shared actionable leadership insights at no cost. I treated each session as if I were on a global stage: promoting the topic in advance, delivering with excellence, and building a digital library of content through recorded sessions.
Over time, consistency-built credibility, and credibility-built demand.
As my audience grew, organizations began reaching out for workshops and speaking engagements. What started as a simple, value-driven visibility strategy evolved into a steady stream of paid opportunities. That momentum ultimately led me to formalize my business—securing my LLC, business license, and fully stepping into entrepreneurship.
More than a decade later, that single decision to invest in my brand has allowed me to speak on global platforms alongside some of the world’s most recognized experts, with engagements spanning Spain, Greece, England, Ghana, and France.
What began as free content became a global career—because I made the intentional decision to be seen, not just employed.
By the way, my first paid client was a local organization for their Women’s group.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a global leadership strategist, executive coach, and entrepreneur with over 30 years of experience spanning multiple industries, including higher education, government, nonprofit, and corporate sectors. My work is centered on one core mission: helping high-performing professionals—particularly women—strategically position themselves for senior leadership and sustainable wealth creation.
My journey into this work was both intentional and deeply personal. I spent years navigating leadership roles, excelling in environments where I was often responsible for driving results but not always positioned for visibility or advancement at the level I knew I had earned. Like many professionals, I realized that hard work alone does not guarantee elevation. Strategy does.
That realization led me to develop the frameworks that now define my work, including *Amplify Your Value*, *Professional Equity*, and *Learn, Practice, Teach*. These methodologies help professionals translate their experience into influence, income, and impact—whether inside an organization or through entrepreneurship.
Through my company, Pruden Global Business Solutions Consulting, I provide executive coaching, leadership development programs, organizational consulting, and global speaking engagements. I also founded the Sister Leaders Conference, a premier leadership experience designed to create access, visibility, and strategic connections for women who are ready to operate at the highest levels.
The problems I solve are often the ones that aren’t openly discussed in professional spaces—lack of visibility despite high performance, unclear pathways to senior leadership, underpaid expertise, and the challenge of converting years of experience into measurable advancement or business success. I help my clients close those gaps with strategy, positioning, and execution.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just teach theory—I’ve lived the journey. I understand what it means to build a career while navigating real-life responsibilities, to make strategic pivots, and to create opportunities when they don’t yet exist. I also bring a data-driven, results-oriented approach to leadership development, ensuring that my clients can clearly articulate and demonstrate their value in any room they enter.
What I am most proud of is the global impact of my work. From speaking on international stages to helping professionals secure promotions, increase their income, and launch successful businesses, the true reward is seeing others expand what they believe is possible for themselves.
If there is one thing I want people to know about my brand and my work, it is this:
I don’t just help you grow—I help you position yourself, so the right opportunities find you.
Because in today’s world, success is not just about what you do.
It’s about how well you amplify the value you already bring.

Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
Absolutely. My business is intentionally designed with multiple, aligned revenue streams that all serve the same core mission—developing high-performing leaders and helping them translate their expertise into measurable impact and income.
At the foundation, I provide business consulting and confidential executive coaching for senior leaders who are navigating complex organizational challenges, career elevation, or strategic transitions. In addition, I offer group coaching programs that allow professionals to grow within a structured, high-impact community environment.
Beyond coaching and consulting, I have built a strong intellectual property ecosystem. This includes publishing books and magazines that extend my frameworks and methodologies to a broader audience, as well as producing content through my podcast and YouTube channel to increase accessibility and visibility.
I also curate experiences—both virtual and live. These include virtual leadership events, large-scale live conferences, and more intimate Executive Roundtables where high-level professionals engage in strategic, solution-focused conversations.
What’s important is that these are not random streams of income—they are interconnected. Each one reinforces the other, creating both depth and scalability. A keynote may lead to a consulting engagement. A book may lead to a coaching client. A roundtable may evolve into a long-term strategic partnership.
I don’t believe in building a business based on a single point of revenue. I believe in building an ecosystem—one that allows for impact at multiple levels while creating sustainability, scalability, and long-term legacy.

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
I built my business through a disciplined and strategic approach to self-funding. When I launched my consulting company, I was still working full-time and also had other revenue-generating ventures. Those income streams gave me the flexibility to bootstrap the business without relying on external investors.
In simple terms, I bet on myself first.
I reinvested my own earnings into building the foundation—developing my brand, creating offerings, and positioning my expertise in the marketplace. That decision gave me full control over the direction of my business and allowed me to grow at a pace aligned with both strategy and sustainability.
As I evolved as an entrepreneur, I became more intentional about financial leverage. I educated myself on business credit and began to use it as a tool to support growth. I strategically utilized business credit to cover operational and expansion expenses, then paid those balances as revenue was generated. This approach allowed me to maintain cash flow while continuing to scale.
Today, my funding model is more sophisticated and diversified. I leverage a combination of strong business credit, multiple revenue streams, and strategic sponsorships—particularly for my live and virtual events. This not only supports growth but also creates opportunities for collaboration and expanded impact.
Ultimately, my journey reflects a key principle I often share with others: you don’t always need large upfront capital to start—you need strategy, discipline, and the willingness to reinvest in your vision consistently.
