We were lucky to catch up with Michelle Abrams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Michelle, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Women of Colorado started as an Instagram page meant to highlight the achievements of women in the state, but it became so much more. From that one fateful day I received a DM saying “so when do we all get to hang out?” I knew we would evolve into something more. From our humble beginnings of a hundred followers to having almost ten thousand followers, nine years and hundreds of events behind us, to say “we got to hang out,” would be an understatement. The emotional process of feeling like someone without a lot of women friends, to becoming a leader in the women’s events space was both a humbling responsibility and an honor. The vision to support other women-owned and local businesses, as well as supporting local organizations and causes, became central to our purpose over the years. I knew women needed a place which was not just another outdoors group, but a space where people of all interests and abilities could find belonging. Women of Colorado is a community of women excited to share all of their uniqueness, a place where their individualism and differences are not just seen, they’re respected and valued.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Women of Colorado is a women’s events group, which hosts all kinds of activities across the state. Our ambassador team consists of visionaries, who have chosen to take on the responsibility of leading women’s events in their communities ranging from community service, artistry, crafting, and herbalism to hiking, fishing, ice climbing and more! We are proud to curate events which serve a wide variety of interests, as well as working to market and curate events for other businesses or non-for-profits looking for support. We collaborate with women-owned businesses and local venues to ensure as much as possible of our resources make it back into our communities.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Providing an experience, memories, and friendships which people can take away from our events is the foundation of our reputation. It’s wonderful to have fun things to do, but it’s even better to have great people to do them with!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I grew up being friends with males and sort of a “tomboy” if you will. I had to unlearn that I didn’t get along with women, and believe in myself and my connections in order to become the leader I am today.
