We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Eduardo Garcia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Eduardo below.
Eduardo , appreciate you joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your business sooner or later
Helados La Azteca was founded by my father back in 98. Originally La Azteca main point of sale was manufacturing popsicles for stores in the DFW area. As the years passed my father transitioned to a more community/public business. Not only selling popsicles for bulk buyers but switching to serving our community with ice cream scoops, corn in a cup, fruit cups, mangonadas etc. I’ve always shadowed my father from a very young age. As a Hispanic family owned business we were all very active in my fathers business. Growing up I never imagined myself one day owning 2 locations of my own. Like every young high school student I felt like I needed to go to college and get a degree to be successful and that’s exactly what I started doing after high school. I regret not having the courage and determination to grow our family business right after high school. I waited until I was 22 to follow in my fathers footsteps. Now 26 with 2 locations of my own I feel like I could’ve had 3-4 locations if I would’ve began at a younger age.
Eduardo , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Helados La Azteca is a Hispanic ice cream shop focused on bringing all of those cultural Hispanic treats to Texas. We manufacture our own Paletas and ice cream in house. We currently have 3 locations in Waco TX. We have a variety of treats like mangonadas, corn in a cup, fruit cups, piñatas, aguas frescas, ice cream etc
Since the age of 8 I have been making popsicles with my father and family. When I turned 22 I opened my first location. This year I was fortunate enough to open our third location. I feel like my father has handed the torch to me and I plan to continue to grow La Azteca with more locations in Temple, Belton, College Station.
I am most proud of being featured on Forbes Next 1000 successful entrepreneurs. In my eyes it was an award not only for me but my family and my city for the support.
Any advice for managing a team?
Get to know your team. Definitely treat them like family so being employed for your business isn’t just another job. Make sure they care about your culture and your business.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Learning how to manage my time. You can’t rewind time so make the most out of every second of the day. Stay close to your family and friends regardless of how successful your business becomes.
